EUGENE–Randy Papé of Eugene has been elected president of the University of Oregon Foundation Board of Trustees for 1999-2000.

Papé, 49, a 1972 UO business graduate, is president and CEO of The Papé Group, Inc., Liberty Financial Group and Mt. Bachelor, Inc. He succeeds Michael L. "Mick" Humphreys in the position. Humphreys, a Bend real estate developer, is serving as board chairman this year.

Papé has been a UO Foundation trustee since 1996. He worked with former UO business school dean Tim McGuire to create a new program to teach professional sales skills to UO business students and others. The Papé Group contributed seed money to launch the program. Papé also has been a major supporter of UO athletics.

He and his wife, Susie, also a 1972 UO graduate and a member of the UO Museum of Art Board of Directors, received the UO Presidential Medal last year for their service to the university, the community and the state.

Randy Papé served on the Governor’s Task Force on Education and the Economy, which recommended significant changes that are helping to reshape higher education in Oregon. He was president of the Oregon Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America from 1996-98 and has served as a board member of The Nature Conservancy of Oregon, the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon Business Council and United Way of Lane County.

The Papés have three sons.

The 52-member UO Foundation Board of Trustees oversees operation of the foundation–a private, nonprofit corporation established by the Oregon Legislature in 1957 to support fund-raising activities of the University of Oregon and to receive and administer private gifts and grants to the university. Board members also serve as advisers to the UO administration and as advocates for the university.

Other 1999-2000 UO Foundation officers are:

• First vice president and president-elect–Brian Obie of Eugene, chairman and CEO of Obie Media Corp.

• Second vice president–Vinton H. "Slim" Sommerville of Medina, Wash., UO Class of ‘58, former president and CEO of Bayliner Marine.

• Secretary–Douglas Ragen, UO Class of ‘64, a Portland attorney.

• Treasurer–David Sparks, Class of ‘66, a certified public accountant and partner in the Eugene firm of Kernutt, Stokes, Brandt & Co.

Eight new board members have been named to serve five-year terms on the Foundation board. They are:

• Sue Thorson Keene of Eugene, who received a master of music degree from the UO in 1972 and who is a former associate dean of the UO College of Arts and Sciences and a prominent advocate for the arts.

• Gaylord Davis, Class of ‘68, a Portland insurance agent, co-founder of Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course and father of UO All-American track star Marie Davis.

• Ray Haroldson of West Linn, Class of ‘62, president of Cascade Empire Corp. and secretary/treasurer of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association.

• Marcia Leonard Aaron of Belmont, Calif., Class of ‘86, a managing director of Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, an international investment bank.

• James Sandstrom of Mountain View, Calif., Class of ‘64, business manager of the Electric Power Research Institute.

• William Randall of Cle Elum, Wash., Class of ‘65, retired president and CEO of First Interstate Bancorporation.

• Calvin R. Smith of Edmonds, Wash., Class of ‘50, a retired manager for the JC Penney Co.

• Danny Hollingshead of Seattle, Wash., Class of ‘69, a managing partner in the Seattle office of the PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting firm.
