EUGENEWinning awards is becoming a perennial habit for Flux, the annual student publication of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. For the seventh time in as many years, Flux has won the 1999 Magazine Pacemaker Award, considered by many to be student journalisms highest honor.
Not only has Flux won a Pacemaker Award each year of its existence, but it also has garnered more than 100 awards and other accolades since the first issue came off the presses in 1993. This years honor adds to its reputation as one of the best college publications in the country.
"This is tough competition, and one that can only be won when all aspects of the magazine meet the highest standards," says journalism professor Tom Wheeler, a co-founder of Flux and one of the magazines faculty advisers. "Its a reflection on Brett (Campbell), Bill (Ryan), all staff members in all positions, the magazine sequenceamong other sequences, the school and the entire university."
Campbell, an adjunct assistant professor, was assigned as lead faculty adviser overseeing Fluxs 1999 issue. Ryan, a co-founder of Flux, advises students on design and layout every year.
In addition to the Pacemaker Award that Volume VII of Flux received, an individual member of the magazines design staff, art associate W. Scott Deckelmann, earned national recognition.
Deckelmann won second place for story development in the Design of the Year category. His photo-derived painting of recent UO Gospel Choir director John Gainer appeared on the issues cover. The accompanying article, "Preaching to the Choir," examined Gainers experiences confronting racism as an African-American living in Eugene. A spring 1999 graduate in magazine journalism, Deckelmann is a resident of 11587 S. Finnegans Way, Oregon City.
The Pacemaker Award is given by the Associated College Press to honor outstanding college newspapers and magazines. Fluxs 54-page annual issue, which featured articles on topics ranging from eco-activism in the forest to ballroom dancing, competed against more than 60 magazine publications and collected one of only five Pacemakers awarded. The magazines are evaluated by professional journalists and other media professionals who serve on the ACPs board of judges.
Fluxs editor-in-chief last year, Kaarin Knudson, now the editor-in-chief of WhereNext.com, an online travel guide based in Portland, says that the award is "a reflection of the tremendous energy and commitment that everyone put in.
メ
It makes me happy for everyone involved," she says. "Flux has set a high standard, and its great to live up to that tradition and expectation that Flux has every year."The 2000 issue of Flux, set for release on May 31, focuses on the environment. The cover story, "Burning Questions," is about the Umatilla Chemical Depot in northeastern Oregon where workers are building a huge incinerator that will begin destroying chemical weapons next year.
The magazine, with a $3 cover price, will be available for purchase at the School of Journalism and Communication in Room 201 of Allen Hall, 1020 University St. It also will be on sale at the UO Bookstore, 895 E. 13th Ave.; in the Duck Shop at the UO Portland Center, 722 S.W. 2nd Ave.; and in Eugene at Smith Family Books, Tsunami Books, Book Mark and Hungry Head Books.

Flux Magazine is run by a magazine production class, with an all-student staff from the editor-in-chief and art director to the writers, designers and photographers. The UO School of Journalism and Communication established the magazine to provide students with the kind of hands-on experience theyll encounter in the real world of professional publishing, and to showcase their work in writing, editing, photography and design.
