EUGENEAlbert Einstein, one of the greatest mathematical thinkers of the 20th century, disliked school because of the mindless drilling that prevailed.
Things are different for some of todays talented and gifted kids, but not for everyone, says Marjorie DeBuse, director of Youth Enrichment/Talented and Gifted Programs at the University of Oregon.
"Too many people believe that gifted students will make it on their own. On the contrary, many of these special students must overcome social and emotional difficulties, peer pressure and curriculum that doesnt challenge them," says DeBuse.
"TAG 2000 Summer Seminar for Educators and Parents" is designed to help. The program will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 30, at Churchill High School, 1850 Bailey Hill Rd., Eugene. Enrollees may choose to earn one academic credit. A pre-seminar lab will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29, also at Churchill.
Six students from local middle schools, high schools and colleges will talk about their experiences growing up giftedboth what has worked for them and what they would have changed. Experts in the field then will respond to what the students have to say. Participants also will visit a number of UO-sponsored enrichment classes at Churchill High School.
Cost for the pre-seminar lab is $35. The Friday seminar, including lunch, will cost $115. The cost for those earning academic credit is $198. Those who choose to enroll at the door may not receive a lunch.
