EUGENE–The 2001 issue of Flux magazine, an award-winning publication produced annually by students at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, recently hit newsstands.

"Daughter of the Secret War," the cover story by graduate student Jenny Moore, tells the story of young Hmong-American women trying to balance their heritage with the modern culture in which they now live.

Other articles include "On the Road Again," a photo essay about the comeback of vintage bikes, and "Crossing the Line," a profile of a Catholic nun who equates her role in the church with social justice, not conservatism.

Soon to be published on the web at <http://influx.uoregon.edu/> will be inFlux, the magazine’s online version.

The 52-page, four-color magazine was planned, written, edited, designed and produced entirely by students who were selected by faculty advisers Carol Ann Bassett, an assistant professor, and Bill Ryan, an associate professor, through a competitive process similar to a professional hiring.

Flux has a reputation for being among the best student-run college publications in the nation. In the eight years it has been produced, Flux has won more than 150 awards, including eight magazine Pacemaker Awards from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP).

In addition, Bassett has learned recently that examples from Flux magazine will be included in a revised edition of "magazine Fundamentals." The 180-page guide, used by media advisers at high schools and colleges nationwide, is published by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a program of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York City.
