EUGENEPhi Beta Kappa has invited 211 University of Oregon students and recent graduates to join the national liberal arts honor society.
Alpha of Oregon Phi Beta Kappa chapter will initiate the new members in a special ceremony, which is open to friends and family, at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, prior to the UO spring commencement.
Judith Eisen, professor of biology, will give a talk on "Dissent from the Garden: The Apple Bites Back," during the initiation ceremony from 8:309:45 a.m. The pre-initiation reception will include refreshments and the music of Celtic harpist Glenn Falkenberg.
Six of the 211 members-elect have been designated the "2001 Oregon Six." Their selection was based on a combination of the exceptional breadth and quality of their upper-division liberal arts course work, very high grade-point averages and letters of recommendation solicited from faculty members in their major departments and in the Robert D. Clark Honors College.
The Oregon Six, who will receive special recognition during the initiation, include:

Membership is limited to students of good conduct and character who have completed at least 164 term credits80 of them during at least five terms in residence on the UO campusby the beginning of spring term. At least 75 percent of UO course work must be in the liberal arts.
In addition, members-elect must have compiled a cumulative UO grade-point average of 3.7, or 3.5 or better when the GPA for work done in the last five terms is 3.8 or higher. At the University of Oregon, a 4.0 GPA is an A average.
