EUGENEThe best films and videos produced by University of Oregon students this year will be on display at the first annual Student Film and Video Festival on Friday, June 15, in Room 100 of Willamette Hall, 1371 E. 13th Ave.
Preceding the 8 p.m. video and film showing, visitors can enjoy refreshments at 7 p.m. while viewing an exhibition of UO photojournalism students prints and animation art in the lobby.
"Students throughout campus are producing creative multi-media film and video work," says Dan Miller, assistant professor of journalism who is organizing the event. "The work that I see on a regular basis is of the highest and most exceptional quality, both artistically and professionally. We are starting this annual festival because our students need a place to showcase their work before their peers and the community at large."
Miller said some of the student entries, such as the advertisements, have already won regional or national awards, and Oregon Public Broadcasting will be showing some of the documentaries this summer.
Tim Gleason, journalism and communication dean, will present certificates and prizes to winners of the festivals juried competition. The student producers of the Best of Show video or film will receive a $100 prize. First-place winners in five categories each will receive $50, while certificates will be given to student producers whose work rates an honorable mention. The five categories include animated films, documentaries, advertisements, music videos, and dramatic and experimental shorts.
The UO School of Journalism and Communication and the National Student Broadcasting Association are sponsoring the festival in collaboration with the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
