FELLOWSHIP BRINGS CANCER RESEARCHER TO UO

Bruce Draper, a University of Oregon postdoctoral fellow, has received a Runyon-Winchell postdoctoral fellowship from the Cancer Research Fund of the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Foundation. The prestigious fellowship, worth approximately $96,000 over three years, will allow Draper to work in the laboratory of noted UO neuroscientist Charles Kimmel. Draper will study mutations in zebrafish embryos. In total, 56 Runyon-Winchell fellowships were awarded to young scientists at major research centers conducting theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention. KIDS, FOOD AND FUN MARK UO CHILD CARE CENTERS' BIRTHDAY

For the clients at the University of Oregon's Child Care and Development Centers (CCDC), 27 years is practically ancient. That's the birthday the CCDC will celebrate on Friday, June 27, with a special party complete with hot dogs, ice cream, a clown, the Oregon Duck mascot and of course lots of children and their families. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1511 Moss St. Administered by the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), the centers comprise seven child care programs serving primarily student families and their children between the ages of 12 months and six years. "The success of the centers is a testament to the university's commitment to children and families," says Dennis Reynolds, EMU child care coordinator. "The centers have helped student parents continue their education at the UO." The program started 27 years ago as a small parent co-op with one classroom and about 12 children. Today, more than 160 children per week are served during the academic year. SOURCE: Dennis Reynolds, EMU child care coordinator, (541) 346-4345.
