UO EDUCATION STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS

EUGENE--Ten undergraduates and seven graduate students at the University of Oregon College of Education received special recognition at an awards ceremony May 30, hosted by the college.

Those receiving awards include:

* Kara Fairchild, a junior majoring in educational studies, 13222 S.E. Sagebrush Dr., Clackamas, and Kevin P. Smith, a senior majoring in educational studies, 137 Sunshine Acres Dr., Eugene, who received the $1,500 Dorothy Carlson Parr Award. Donald Parr established this award to honor his late wife, a music teacher, and goes to education majors who will use music to teach children with behavior problems or who have experienced trauma or turmoil in their lives.

* Janice Kniesmeyer, a senior majoring in communication disorders and sciences, 112 N.W. 8th St., Corvallis, and Wendy Holley, a master's degree student in school psychology, 5311 Pioneer Rd., Medford, who received $1,500 Helena DeGnath Wessela Awards. This award goes to students whose studies focus on children with disabilities.

* Rosannah Hayden, a master's degree student in communication disorders and sciences, 1609 Wilson St., Eugene, who received the $2,000 Kasey Elizabeth Lindeleaf Scholarship that assists outstanding students who plan to work with children with communications disorders.

* Deborah K. Johnson, a doctoral degree student in developmental disabilities, 1838 Villard St., Eugene; T. Brook MacNamara, a doctoral degree student in developmental disabilities, 760 W. Main St., Monmouth; and Mary Dalmau, a doctoral degree student in developmental disabilities, and educational policy and management, 125A Waverly St., Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Australia, who received $2,000 Chamberlein Memorial Research Awards. These awards help support outstanding research projects by graduate students.

* Rachel Shepard, a doctoral degree student in counseling psychology, 3460 Pearl St., Eugene, and Krista Marie Gragg, a doctoral degree student in counseling psychology, 5606 78th Ave. E., Palmetto, Fla., who received a $1,500 Jean Twohig Scholarship in Counseling Psychology. The award is for students who focus on human services and working with families and communities.

* Larry Walker, a freshman majoring in educational studies, 304 Brookside Dr., Eugene, who received a $3,500 full-tuition scholarship from the Janette Gunther Drew Endowed Scholarship Fund. Drew established the scholarship to encourage young people to meet the challenge of educating the next generation.

* Melissa Link, a junior majoring in communications disorders and sciences, 1401 W. Ellendale, Apt. 29, Dallas, and Tyler Dempster, a junior majoring in communication disorders and sciences, 19 Pintail, Irvine, Calif., who received the Undergraduate Award for Academic Excellence in Communication Sciences, which includes a $125 award.

* Laura Kane, a junior majoring in communication disorders and sciences, 487 Welcome Court S.E. Salem, who received the $2,000 Fred K. Thompson Scholarship. Thompson spent his entire life working as a janitor in the Portland School District, saving his earnings and living a very prudent and frugal life. Thompson's estate established the fund in memory of his belief in the importance of education and especially the vital role of the teacher.

* Sheri Schueler, a master's degree student in school psychology, 431 Lincoln, Walla Walla, Wash., who received the $1,500 Grace Graham Memorial Scholarship.

* Nicole Lee Hughes, a junior majoring in educational studies, 689 E. Ridgefield Dr., Boise, Idaho, who received the $1,000 Paul B. Jacobson Scholarship. This award honors Jacobson, a former dean of the College of Education. The scholarship goes to a student majoring in educational studies who is interested in becoming a teacher and may also be interested in school administration.

* Leanne Sipple, a master's degree student in communication disorders and sciences, Rt. 3, Box 217, Menomonie, Wis., who received the Undergraduate Award for Clinical Excellence, which includes a $250 scholarship.
