EUGENE--Phi Beta Kappa has invited 171 University of Oregon students and recent graduates to join the national liberal arts honor society. Alpha of Oregon Phi Beta Kappa chapter will initiate the new members in a special ceremony at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 14, prior to UO spring commencement. Lauren Kessler, a professor in the UO School of Journalism and Communication, will address the members-elect and their invited guests during at the reception and induction in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. Kessler's topic is "The Myth of Media Objectivity." Six of the 171 members-elect have been designated the "1997 Oregon Six." Their selection was based on a combination of very high grade-point averages, the exceptional breadth and quality of their upper-division liberal arts course work, and letters of recommendation solicited from faculty members in their major departments. The Oregon Six, who will receive special recognition during the initiation, include: * Michael Lance Bell, a winter 1997 graduate in general science from Missoula, Mont. * Joshua David Curtis, a history major from Haiku, Hawaii. * Simon Paul De Szoeke, a mathematics and physics major from Corvallis. * Yasuko Morisada, an international studies and sociology major from Ibaraki, Japan. * Max Benjamin Novick, a history major from Eugene. * Elise Temple, a biology and psychology major from Eugene. Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest liberal arts academic honorary, was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Oregon has two chapters, one at the University of Oregon and the other at Reed College in Portland. All graduates in spring, summer or fall of 1996 and in winter 1997, as well as those expected to graduate in spring, summer or fall 1997 and winter 1998, were considered for membership, according to UO chapter secretary Nan Coppock-Bland, University Publications associate director. Membership is limited to students of good conduct and character who have completed at least 164 term credits--80 of them during at least five terms in residence on the UO campus--by the beginning of spring term. At least 75 percent of UO course work must be in the liberal arts. In addition, members-elect must have compiled a cumulative UO grade-point average of 3.7, or 3.5 or better when the GPA for work done in the last five terms is 3.8 or higher. At the University of Oregon, a 4.0 GPA is an A average.
To be eligible, students also must have taken a specified number and distribution of upper-division courses in the three liberal arts areas--arts and letters, social science or science. They may not choose the pass/no pass grading option for more than eight of those credits.
