Duck colors ride to Kentucky Derby, Preakness victories

June 2, 1997

More than 100,000 University of Oregon alumni have a favorite pick in Saturday's Belmont Stakes. They'll be cheering for Silver Charm, whose jockey will be wearing the familiar Duck green and yellow silks. Silver Charm, pride of the stables owned by UO alumni Bob and Beverly Lewis of Newport Beach, Calif., already has carried the Duck colors to victory in the famed Kentucky Derby and Preakness, the first two legs of racing's triple crown. Bob and Beverly chose Duck green and yellow for their racing silks because they met and fell in love on the UO campus as students in the late `40s. When UO President Dave Frohnmayer learned that the Lewis' horse was running in the Derby, he sent a bouquet of yellow roses trimmed in green ribbon for luck. Hoping for more of the Duck luck, the Lewis' invited Frohnmayer to join them as their guest in the owners' box at the Belmont Stakes Saturday when Silver Charm runs for the glory of racing's triple crown. Because of a schedule conflict, Frohnmayer can't attend but is sending the luck along with Duncan McDonald, UO's vice president for public affairs and development. McDonald and his wife Jane will be the Lewis' guest on their chartered private jet out of Los Angeles International Airport and in New York. McDonald will be carrying the Oregon luck with him in the form of specially made silver charms fastened to a lapel ribbon in the school's colors. The charms say, "Oregon's Pride, Silver Charm, Triple Crown 1997." Oregon racing fans can look for it on the Lewis' lapels when they are interviewed by the television crews covering New York's Belmont Stakes race. SOURCE: Duncan McDonald, UO vice president for public affairs, will be available around noon , Tuesday, June 3, for interviews and ready to display a silver charm before leaving in the early afternoon for LAX; call (541) 346-5555 for an interview appointment.
