RAIN OR SHINE, UO COMMENCEMENT STAYS AT HAYWARD

June 13, 1997

Rain or shine, the University of Oregon's main ceremony marking its 120th spring commencement will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Hayward Field, East 15th Avenue and Agate Street. If it rains, alternate locations for nine individual department, school and college ceremonies, which had planned outdoor ceremonies, will be faxed to media after 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. The U.S. Weather Service is predicting dry skies.

The UO has arranged free parking at 500 posted meters on the perimeter of campus, provided for family, friends and graduates attending commencement. Free parking also is available in lots at East 15th Avenue and Columbia Street, or East 14th Avenue and Kincaid Street. Because parking will be limited and heavy traffic is anticipated, visitors are advised to arrive early.

More than 3,700 spring term candidates for bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees and fall and winter graduates are eligible to participate. President Dave Frohnmayer will preside, and retired U.S. Sen. Mark Hatfield of Oregon will deliver the keynote address.

MEDIA ASSISTANCE ON SATURDAY: Gaye Vandermyn of the UO Office of Communications will be in the section reserved for media on the southwest end of the field near the speakers' platform. She will provide reporters with commencement programs, background information and other assistance, as needed. Before, after and during the ceremony, she can be reached on cellular phone, (541) 954-6402, or by pager, (541) 465-0349.
