EUGENE-- The University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts (AAA) will award its highest honor to Seattle architect Johnpaul Jones during spring commencement. Dean Robert Z. Melnick, Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, will present the Ellis F. Lawrence Medal to Jones at the school's commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13. The ceremony will take place on the east lawn of the Erb Memorial Union on campus, 1222 E. 13th Ave. (RAIN: McArthur Court, 1601 University St.). This is the first year the UO school is awarding the Lawrence Medal, an inscribed bronze medallion accompanied by an original broadside certificate to be awarded annually to an outstanding alumnus of the UO school. "We give this award as our highest honor to Johnpaul Jones," Melnick said, "in recognition that his accomplishments transcend architecture, landscape architecture, and historic preservation; and with enduring respect for his dedication to practice and to a life that honors social and cultural integrity at their foundation." Jones is a senior principal in Jones & Jones, Architects and Landscape Architects of Seattle. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a distinguished member of the architectural community. Jones, a Native American of Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, is design consultant on the project. Jones is the architect for the planned Many Nations Longhouse, a Native American cultural center on the UO campus. He recently was selected to design a major new Children's Environmental Learning Center in the Puget Sound region. The project is sponsored by environmental philanthropists Paul and Debbie Brainerd. Jones is a member of the following boards and commissions: the Western Washington University Outdoor Sculpture Collection Advisory Board; Indian Art Northwest Artists Council in Portland Ore.; and the National AIA scholarship awards committee. The Lawrence medal is named in honor of the founder of the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts, Portland architect and educator Ellis F. Lawrence.
