EUGENE--The Oregon Daily Emerald board of directors, in a break with tradition, has named Michael Hines as the summer 1998 editor-in-chief and, starting in the fall of 1998, Ryan Frank as editor-in-chief of the award-winning independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon.

Hines, a senior magazine journalism major, will replace the current editor-in-chief Sarah Kickler, a senior news-editorial journalism major of 1211 Bayberry Rd., Lake Oswego.

Hines, the son of John and Phyllis Hines of 6249 Bridgeview Dr., West Linn, will assume the duties of summer editor-in-chief in June. He currently is a student activities reporter for the Emerald and works in the sports department at The Register-Guard.

The selection of a summer editor-in-chief is a break with tradition for the Emerald. The editor-in-chief usually starts the position in the summer but all the applicants for the position this year had already committed themselves to summer internships before applying. Joe Kidd, chairman of the Emerald board of directors, says board members decided to change the tradition this year because internships have become so important to journalism students.

"I see myself as the link between Sarah [Kickler] and Ryan [Frank]," said Hines, noting how important it is to him to keep the Emerald in award-winning shape over the summer. "It is an honor to work as the editor of a paper of this caliber."

"The board was very pleased with all of the candidates," said Holly Sanders, vice chair of the Emerald board. "But Mike was an outstanding candidate for the position. His journalism experience and commitment to the Emerald made him an ideal candidate for the summer editor-in-chief."

A junior news-editorial journalism major, Frank will assume his duties officially in September for the 1998-99 academic year after completing a summer internship with The Oregonian. He is the son of Lynn and Terri Frank of 1298 Hemlock St. N.W., Salem.

Frank will start his paid, part-time position in the fall. He has Emerald experience dating back to his 1995 debut as a freelance reporter. Quickly moving to the sports desk, first as a freelancer and later as a reporter, Frank took over the sports editor position at the end of his sophomore year.

Frank's main goal for the Emerald is to increase its presence on campus by improving its website, involving more students and increasing the paper's community connections. He also hopes to better prepare the staff for jobs outside of college through more training and professional mentoring.
