EUGENEThe Oregon Daily Emerald board of directors has named Tim Pyle as the summer 1999 editor-in-chief and, starting in the fall of 1999, Laura Cadiz as editor-in-chief of the award-winning independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon.
Pyle, a junior news-editorial journalism major, is the son of Gayle and Don Pyle of 3170 Edgemont Rd., Lake Oswego. The Emeralds 1998-99 sports editor, he will assume the duties of summer editor-in-chief in June, replacing the current editor-in-chief Ryan Frank, a senior news-editorial journalism major of 1298 Hemlock St. N.W., Salem.
The editor-in-chief position has traditionally started with summer term and continued through spring, but in the past two years applicants for the position had already committed themselves to summer internships, creating the need for a summer position.
"The position is a bridge between the spring and fall," Pyle said. "I hope to keep the Emerald going in the direction its headed because it is already doing great things."
With a background primarily in sports writing, Pyle says he hopes to become a more well-rounded journalist through this experience. He has contributed to the Emerald since his sophomore year when he started as a freelance writer.
"Tims experience as a sports editor and his great people skills really make him an important asset to the Emerald," says Emerald board chairman Larry Tergesen, associate director of accounting in the UO Office of Business Affairs. He also said the summer position works well for the paper because it is an important transition time to get ready for the fall.
Cadiz, the daughter of Sherry Fancher of 13027 S.E. Mill, Portland, is a junior news-editorial journalism major. Cadiz will officially assume her duties as editor-in-chief in September for the 1999-2000 academic year after completing a summer internship with The Baltimore Sun. She also has had newsroom internships with such papers as The Register-Guard in Eugene, The Corvallis Gazette-Times, The Statesman Journal in Salem and The Oregonian in Portland.
"Im really ambitious and dedicated to the news field," Cadiz said. "Ive always had a good vision of what I want. That vision is really important to have as an editor."
Cadiz will start her paid, part-time position in the fall. She has Emerald experience dating back to her freshman year as a higher education reporter. She quickly moved up to the higher education editor position during her second term on staff. Cadiz was the 1998-99 Emeralds managing editor.
"Laura has had extensive experience working on the Emerald staff," Tergesen says. "During that time she has developed good working relationships." He also said the board was very impressed with her many internship experiences.
Cadizs main goal for the Emerald is to build a more ethnically diverse staff.
"Different issues are important to different people," she said. "It is important to have a staff that mirrors the diversity in the community. Thats difficult to do when everyone on staff is from the same background."
"Both Tim and Laura are bright and energetic people with the level of journalistic skill needed to succeed in the position," Tergesen says about the selection of Pyle and Cadiz. "The Emerald is very lucky to have both of them. This is what they love to do; its where their heart is."
