EUGENE–Phi Beta Kappa has invited 170 University of Oregon students and recent graduates to join the national liberal arts honor society.

Alpha of Oregon Phi Beta Kappa chapter will initiate the new members in a special ceremony at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, prior to the UO spring commencement.

James Earl, professor of English, will give a brief talk, "Feeding the Ancestors," during the initiation ceremony from 8:30—9:40 a.m. The preceremony reception will include refreshments and the music of Celtic harpist Glenn Falkenberg.

Six of the 170 members-elect have been designated the "1999 Oregon Six." Their selection was based on a combination of very high grade-point averages, the exceptional breadth and quality of their upper-division liberal arts course work, and letters of recommendation solicited from faculty members in their major departments.

The Oregon Six, who will receive special recognition during the initiation, include:

• Laura Ann Isolde, a spring 1999 degree candidate in comparative literature from Eugene.

• Todd Lucas Blevins, a chemistry and German major from McMinnville.

• Melinda Clarice Palmer, a spring 1999 degree candidate in humanities and Romance languages from Milwaukie.

• Stephanie Li Jhin Yuki Yap, a fall 1998 graduate in general science from Tigard.

• Eric L. Pacini, a spring 1999 degree candidate in biochemistry from Stockton, Calif.

• Hilary Anne Hewes, a spring 1999 degree candidate from Albuquerque, N.M.

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest liberal arts academic honorary, was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Oregon has two chapters, one at the University of Oregon and the other at Reed College in Portland.

All graduates in spring, summer or fall of 1998 and in winter of 1999, as well as those expected to graduate in spring, summer or fall 1999 and winter 2000, were considered for membership, according to UO chapter secretary Nan Coppock-Bland, University Publications associate director.

Membership is limited to students of good conduct and character who have completed at least 164 term credits–80 of them during at least five terms in residence on the UO campus–by the beginning of spring term. At least 75 percent of UO course work must be in the liberal arts.

In addition, members-elect must have compiled a cumulative UO grade-point average of 3.7, or 3.5 or better when the GPA for work done in the last five terms is 3.8 or higher. At the University of Oregon, a 4.0 GPA is an A average.

To be eligible, students also must have taken a specified number and distribution of upper-division courses in the three liberal arts areas–arts and letters, social science or science. They may not choose the pass/no pass grading option for more than eight of those credits.
