EUGENEEighteen minority teens from 16 high schools in 15 Northwest cities produced a newspaper at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication during a summer journalism workshop from June 1722.
Funded by a grant from the Oregonian Publishing Co. and the S.I. Newhouse Foundation, the week-long session provided instruction and hands-on practice in topics ranging from interviewing to digital imaging, according to John Russial, assistant professor and workshop coordinator.
"Students did the reporting, editing, photography and design," says Russial. "They also attended classroom sessions and worked closely with visiting newspaper professionals and journalism professors."
