UO FORUM TEACHES LANE COUNTY TEENS ABOUT ‘WOMAN POWER’

March 2, 2000

Contact Pauline Austin (541) 346-3129

Remember the great history stories you read about Matilda Flanders, Milisand of Jersuleum and Charlemagne’s granddaughter Juding? No? That’s probably because the men who wrote the history books thought most medieval women weren’t important enough to write about–even when they ruled countries, acted as judges and led sieges. Nearly 100 Lane County high school students and their teachers will learn about these women and many others who helped shape the history of the modern world when they attend the "Transformations: Women in History" symposium at the University of Oregon. The Friday, March 3, event is sponsored by the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society. Symposium leaders also will talk about warrior women, poison and power in ancient Rome, Native American autobiography and women painters. The symposium opens at 9 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St., and will continue until 3 p.m. CONTACT: Jan Emerson, research associate, UO Center for the Study of Women in Society,
