EUGENE–A "Chamber Musicale," a percussion tribute, a harp celebration and rousing gospel music will highlight the four student ensemble concerts set on one busy Sunday afternoon this week to conclude winter term at the University of Oregon School of Music,
961 E. 18th Ave.

Sunday, March 18–Chamber Musicale

At 1 p.m., student chamber ensembles under the direction of Assistant Professor Gregory Mason will give a "Chamber Musicale" at 1 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The program will include a wide selection of chamber music from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including "String Quartet in C Minor" by Brahms, "Sonata for Flute and Piano" by Martinu, "Trio in B-flat" for cello, clarinet and piano by Beethoven, "Moments" for flute and piano by Robert Muczynski, "Sonata for Clarinet" by Poulenc and "Sonata in A Minor" for violin and piano by Franck.

The performers are graduate and undergraduate music students. Mason is director of chamber music studies at the School of Music.

Sunday, March 18–University Percussion Ensemble

At 3 p.m., the University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of graduate teaching fellow Sean Wagoner, will perform "A Tribute to Anthony J. Cirone" in Room 198 of the Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

 

The program includes four selections by San Francisco composer Anthony J. Cirone who is well-known for his contemporary percussion works–"Triptych," "Three Phases for Marimba Quartet," "Japanese Impressions" and "Four Four for Four Percussionists."

Also on the program is a violin sonata transcribed for solo marimba, performed by Brenda Lauffenberger.

Sunday, March 18–University Harp Ensemble

At 4 p.m., the University Harp Ensemble, under the direction of Sally Maxwell, will present a program of harp music in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

A dozen concert harps will be featured in various combinations–including an alumni trio–and in a wide variety of musical styles, from classical and romantic to modern. The performers are current and former students of Maxwell.

Maxwell, who will retire at the end of the academic year, has been professor of harp at the School of Music since 1974. The concert is also dedicated to the memory of Jeanne Manela, a 1990 UO harp graduate who passed away last year.

The program will include works from the Spanish, French and Japanese traditions, including "La Joyeuse" by Jean-Philippe Rameau, "Concerto in B-flat" and "Arioso" by Handel, "Music Box" by Liadov, "Les Pins de Charlannes" by Henriette Renie, "Aria in Classic Style" by Marcel Grandjany, "La Cathedrale engloutie" by Claude Debussy, "Jota" by Enrique Granados as well as several other selections.

The program will close with "Fraicheur" by Carlos Salzedo, featuring the combined group of 12 harpists.

Sunday, March 18–University Gospel Ensemble and Gospel Choir

At 6 p.m., the University Gospel Ensemble, Gospel Choir and Gospel Singers, all under the direction of Cedric Weary, will perform some of today’s greatest traditional and contemporary gospel music in the Ballroom of the Erb Memorial, 1222 E. 13th Ave. Special guest artist will be faculty guitarist Mike Denny.

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The performance will feature songs by Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, New Divine Destiny, The Tri-City Singers and Lamar Campbell, as well as arrangements by director Cedric Weary.

Featured instrumentalists in the Gospel Band accompanying the singers are Thierry Renoux, Mark Schneider, Scott Rubey, Alex Cooper and Dev Sanders.
