EUGENE–The University of Oregon School of Music will host dozens of French horn players from all over the Pacific Northwest March 23—25 when the Northwest Horn Society holds three days of horn recitals, competitions and master classes.

The entire conference, as well as individual concerts and events, are open to the public. All activities will be at the School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave., with concerts in Beall Concert Hall or in Room 198.

Registration for the conference is $75 or $65 for Northwest Horn Society members. Students may register for $40.

Admission for guest artist recitals is $15 each, while ensemble concerts and master classes cost $10 apiece. Lecture and competition session admissions are $5. Tickets will be sold immediately prior to each performance at the Beall Hall ticket office.

Director of the workshop is Ellen Campbell, associate professor of horn at the UO School of Music. Guest artists appearing at the three-day event include Thomas Bacon, Steve Durnin, David Krehbiel and Jim Patterson. Featured ensembles include the UO Horn Choir, the Portland State Horn Octet, the Central Washington Horn Ensemble and the Horns of Portland.

Bacon has held principal positions with the Detroit, Berlin Radio and Houston symphonies. A member of Summit Brass, the St. Louis Brass Quintet, The Golden Horn and Opus 90, he performs worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist. Bacon has been on the faculties of Rice and Arizona State universities, and has taught master classes at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world.

Durnin is a Los Angeles studio artist with extensive and varied experience. He performs with many West Coast orchestras, including the New Amsterdam, Long Beach Opera and Hollywood Bowl orchestras. As a studio artist, Durnin has recorded for Disney, Warner Brothers, MGM, Fox and others.

 

Krehbiel is the former principal horn of the San Francisco Symphony, which he joined in 1974 after holding the same position in Detroit since 1963. He also was assistant horn in the Chicago Symphony under the direction of Fritz Reiner. A member of the Summit Brass, Krehbiel has been involved with the educational activities of the New World Symphony and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. He studied horn at Fresno State University and as a graduate student at Northwestern with Philip Farkas.

Patterson of Los Angeles customizes horns. His repair abilities and horn maintenance skills are in high demand.
