EUGENE--University of Oregon students are preparing to roll out the welcome mat for next fall's newcomers. The UO Office of Orientation has selected 14 undergraduates for the 1998 Student Orientation Staff. A Student Orientation staff member is an undergraduate student selected to assist with the orientation and transition of UO new students and parents during IntroDUCKtion in the summer and UO Week of Welcome in the fall. "Student Orientation staff members are responsible for welcoming new students and their parents, leading academic advising workshops, assisting with seminars and workshops, and programming activities," says Stephanie Wilson, director of orientation. "The orientation staff help prepare social, recreational and academic activities for the soon-to-be Ducks." About 2,400 new students are expected to participate in this summer's orientations. Five IntroDUCKtion programs are scheduled for July 9-10, 12-13, 16-17, 19-20 and 23-24, with an abbreviated program on July 22 exclusively for transfer students. Initial reservation deadline for any of the summer events is June 19. Wilson says IntroDUCKtion helps new freshmen and transfer students become acquainted with the campus, meet new students and faculty, and receive academic advising. The students are able to register for fall classes instead of waiting until September. Special sessions addressing questions and concerns of parents and students are included in the program. Orientation staff selection began in January, when the Office of Orientation solicited faculty, staff, residence halls and student organizations across campus for nominations. Applicants were evaluated on their overall knowledge of the UO campus and on how well they work with groups. New Student Orientation Staff members for 1998 are:
