EUGENE--A jazz concert with a guest artist from the East Coast and an all-day workshop for clarinetists of all ages with a guest artist from Utah will wrap up winter-term activities this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave. For more information, call the UO School of Music weekdays at (541) 346-5678. Friday, March 13--Oregon Jazz Ensembles with guest artist Conrad Herwig New York jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig will team up with the School of Music's award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble for a concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Jazz Lab Bands II and III also will be on the program. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. Herwig started his professional career in the early 1980s with the Clark Terry Big Band and later joined the Buddy Rich Band for tours of the United States and Europe. Locating permanently in New York, he performed with Slide Hampton and the World of Trombones, Mario Bauza's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi, the Mel Lewis Orchestra, Bob Mintzer, Henry Threadgill, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and Frank Sinatra. He has recorded seven albums as a leader, the latest being "The Latin Side of John Coltrane." In constant demand as a sideman, Herwig is currently performing and recording with groups such as Eddie Palmieri's Afro-Caribbean Octet, Paquito D'Rivera and the UN Orchestra, Joe Henderson and the Mingus Big Band, among many others. An alumnus of North Texas State University, Herwig has given seminars and workshops at major universities and conservatories around the world. He is a recipient of performance and teaching grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and currently is a member of the jazz faculty at William Patterson College in New Jersey. Saturday, March 14--Clarinet Day UO clarinet professor Wayne Bennett and guest artist Nicholas Morrison will lead an all-day workshop for clarinet players. The day's activities begin at 10 a.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Registration is $5 in advance or $6 at the door.
The workshop is designed for clarinet players of all ages and will culminate in a concert in which participants will perform with the two faculty members. For more information, contact Wayne Bennett, (541) 346-3772. Morrison is professor of clarinet and associate director of bands at Utah State University. He is a member of the Logan Canyon Winds, Utah State's faculty wind quintet, and is clarinetist with the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra. Morrison has performed with the South Bend, Tallahassee, Fort Wayne and Jacksonville Symphony orchestras, in addition to making solo appearances with the New World and Arcata string quartets, the Utah Music Festival and the Orchestre Philharmonique Ste. Trinitie in Haiti. Bennett joined the UO music faculty in 1978 and is currently conductor of the University Symphony and professor of clarinet studies. As a clarinetist, Bennett has performed with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Indiana Chamber Orchestra. He has served as principal clarinet with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and the Oregon Coast Festival, and currently is principal clarinet with the Sunriver Festival Orchestra.
