Monday, April 6--Oboe Master Class with guest artist Ray Still

Ray Still, former oboist with the Chicago Symphony, will present an oboe master class for oboists of all ages. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby of Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave., and the class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the music school. Fees are $10 for high school students and younger, $15 for adults and $20 for a limited number of participants who will receive coaching during the class.

The class will feature standard literature for the oboe, including arias from Bach cantatas and orchestral excerpts.

Still, who is considered one of the elite oboists in the world, was hired by Fritz Reiner of the Chicago Symphony in the 1950s, and his nearly 40 years with the symphony included service under conductors Jean Martinon and George Solti. Still retired from the Chicago Symphony four years ago and is now professor of oboe at Northwestern University.

UO Associate Professor J. Robert Moore, who was one of Still's pupils, is organizing the master class. Sponsors include Lights for Music, Buffet/Boosey & Hawkes, and the UO School of Music.

Tuesday, April 7--The Oregon Wind Ensemble premieres "Sea Dreams"

The Oregon Wind Ensemble will be joined by horn soloists Ellen and Douglas Campbell for a world premiere performance of "Sea Dreams" by David Maslanka. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Also on the program is "In Evening's Stillness," a 1996 composition by Joseph Schwantner.

Maslanka is one of today's big-name composers for wind music. He will be in Eugene to coach a couple of rehearsals a few days before the performance.

The Oregon Wind Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor Robert Ponto, is one of the music school's premier ensembles. It specializes in challenging 20th-century music.

Ellen Campbell joined the UO music faculty in 1994 as an assistant professor of horn. She previously served on the faculty at Southwest Texas State University and, more recently, at the University of New Mexico. While in New Mexico, she was hornist with the New Mexico Brass Quintet, an ensemble with whom she toured Finland, the Soviet Union, Mexico and Australia. She has been principal horn with the Santa Fe and Kalamazoo symphonies and the Austin Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, she has appeared with orchestras in Michigan, Texas, New Mexico, Iowa and Pennsylvania, has presented solo recitals throughout the United States, and has been an invited performer at several regional and international workshops of the International Horn Society.

Douglas Campbell, Ellen's husband, is professor emeritus from Michigan State University. He has been a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and the Houston Symphony, and he served as principal horn of the Greater Lansing Symphony while acting as professor of horn at Michigan State. He was hornist with the renowned Richards Quintet, the woodwind quintet in residence at MSU. The Richards Quintet toured extensively across the United States and Canada, performed for a state dinner at the White House and toured the People's Republic of China with the governor of Michigan.
