Details about the 15 award winners and their awards follow the listing provided below that identifies recipients and their hometowns.EUGENEFifteen University of Oregon students, two campus living organizations and two faculty member will receive recognition for their outstanding achievements on Saturday, May 20, during the annual Family Weekend All-University Awards luncheon.
Pi Beta Phi sorority and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity will receive Burt Brown Barker Vice Presidential Cups for the womens and mens living organizations, including both members and pledges, with the highest cumulative grade-point index (GPI) for the year ending winter term 2000. On a scale with an A average equal to a 4.0 GPI, Pi Beta Phis cumulative GPI is 3.1501 and Delta Sigma Phis cumulative GPI is 2.9858. Both chapters received the same award last year.

D.U.B.S. AWARDEstablished 10 years ago by students Doug Untalan and Brian Sandy, this award recognizes the efforts of those administrators who have shown the highest concern and involvement enhancing the education and lives of the student body. This years recipients are:
Jack Bennett, director of Freshman Interest Groups, Student Retention Programs.
Stephanie Dixon Winchester, manager of the Break recreation center and the Buzz coffeehouse at the Erb Memorial Union.
Vernon Barkhurst Award
This award, a plaque, is for the sophomore who "best exemplifies academic excellence, university service and good citizenship." The award was established in 1984 in honor of Vernon Barkhurst, who served the university as director of admissions, associate dean of students and student conduct coordinator.
Barkhurst Award winner Matthew Roy Lieuallen, a sophomore political science major, is the son of Douglas and Patricia Lieuallen, 364 S.E. Woodside Court, Madras.
Lieuallen has been involved with the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) since last spring. Now the ASUO housing advocate, he was an ASUO outreach associate. He also has volunteered for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Alliance in various activities and helped in raising awareness about the LGBT issues on UO campus. He was a pledge of Delta Lambda Phi fraternity.
Bess Templeton Cristman Award
This award, honoring a 1931 UO alumna, is a full-tuition grant awarded to a junior woman "who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, scholarship and service."
Mayra Lizette Gomez is receiving the Cristman Award this year. A junior sociology and planning, public policy and management major with a minor in Spanish, she is the daughter of Efrain and Maria E. Gomez, 9494 Saint Louis Ave., Portland.
Gomez is actively involved with Chicano and Latino issues on and off campus. She has been the coordinator for GANAS, a program that provides tutoring services to Latino middle school students in the Eugene area. In addition, Gomez has been a GANAS tutor since September, tutoring students twice a week. She also has been an officer of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA), a Chicano and Latino student group. In addition, Gomez volunteered at the National Association of Chicano and Chicano Studies Conference and tutored Latino students for the High School Equivalency Program.
Frohnmayer Recognition Award
This award, a certificate, was established by the Honors and Awards Committee to recognize a continuing student for his or her ongoing, exemplary service and strong commitment to the University of Oregon.
Greg Dee Byrd is the recipient of the Frohnmayer Recognition Award. A fifth-year senior in biology and biochemistry, he is the son of Dee and Dianne Byrd, 1365 S.E. 51st Ave., Hillsboro.
Byrd has been a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society since 1997. He also received the Deans Service Award, a University Scholarship, the Koyl Cup in 1999, a Cancer Research Federation Award in 1999 and Laurel Scholarships in both 1998 and 1999. He also has been selected as a student representative to the UO Foundation Board of Trustees.
Byrd was one of the members in the Duck Mascot team in 199697.
Gerlinger Cup
This award recognizes an outstanding woman in the junior class for achievement in scholarship, leadership and service to the community.
Elizabeth Mary Mohr and Marian Grace Fowler are the recipients of the Gerlinger Cup this year. Mohr, a junior educational studies major, is the daughter of Francis and Tay Mohr, 1555 14th St., Baker City, while Fowler, a junior political science and Romance languages major, is the daughter of Patricia J. Armstrong, 11080 S.E. 28th Ave., Milwaukie.
Mohr has been an UO Ambassador whose responsibilities include contacting admitted students and answering questions about their expected UO enrollment. Mohr also is a member of Druids, a junior honor society, and has volunteered at St. Thomas More Newman Center as a member of the Student Activities Leadership Team. In addition, she has been a peer adviser for the College of Education.
Fowler is the ASUO community outreach director and has been a member of the Campus Community Relations Task Force, helping to coordinate events on Halloween weekend and representing a student perspective on community issues and concerns.
In addition to her participation in student government, Fowler has been a note taker for Disability Services and the recipient of a UO Presidential Scholarship since 1997. She also has made the Deans Lists every term since she entering the UO in 1997. She received Centurion Award in 1999 and was the membership chair of the Ancient Order of Druids honor society.
Ray Hawk Award
This award, a cup and an alumni chair, recognizes the outstanding member of the senior class. It was established in 1982 in honor of Ray Hawk, a former UO vice president for administration and finance. Recipients are chosen for their leadership, scholastic achievement, service to students and the university, involvement in student activities and contribution to the quality of undergraduate life.
Hawk Award recipient Brian Thomas Jennaro, a senior business administration and economics major, is the son of Bob and Sue Jennaro, 1715 Rockhurst Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colo.
Jennaro has been the treasurer of the Crystal Organ Transplant Foundation since February 1999. In addition, he was hired by the UO Career Center to help organize Alumni Success Stories, a guest lecture that was about how five UO graduates transitioned into their careers. Jennaro is the co-founder and marketing director of UOBOOKHUNT.com and is one of the founding members of the UO chapter of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
Mary Hudzikiewicz Award
This award, a trophy, was established in 1999 by the Honors and Awards Committee to honor a freshman student who has displayed a willingness to be involved in campus activities and who exemplifies academic excellence. It is named for Mary Hudzikiewicz, a UO alumna and longtime campus administrator, most recently assistant dean of student life.
Eric James Bailey is the 2000 recipient of the Mary Hudzikiewicz Award. A freshman undeclared major, he is the son of Jim and Katie Bailey, P.O. Box 1396, Tualatin.
Since enrolling at the UO last fall, Bailey has volunteered on the Area Standards Board and was elected as vice chair of the Residence Hall Association. In addition, he has been elected as an ASUO senator and was selected as a program assistant by University Housing for the 20002001 academic year.
Maurice Harold Hunter Leadership Scholarship
This scholarship honors junior men judged to have made "the most notable contribution through achievement and good example toward the development of qualities of leadership among fellow students." The awards are full-tuition grants.
Hunter Scholarship recipient Scott G. Reed is a junior economics and finance major. He is the son of Jim and Carol Reed, 6910 S.W. 11th Dr., Portland.
Reed was appointed by the Lundquist College of Business in winter 2000 to the Faculty Tenure Review Committee, which made him the first undergraduate student ever appointed to this position. In addition, he has been the ethics workshop coordinator for the colleges honors program and was an ASUO academic student senator from winter 1998 through fall 1999. An ASUO legislative intern in fall 1998, Reed received a Centurion Award last spring for his leadership and service to the UO.
Koyl Cup
This award is named for the late Charles Koyl, a 1911 UO alumnus. It is given to the junior man "who has shown the best all-around progress in leadership, service and academic achievement."
Koyl Cup honoree Greg William Danielson is a junior public relations major and the son of Launie Danielson, P.O. Box 187, Philomath.
Danielson co-chairs University Day and Homecoming Ball organizing committees. In addition, he is the Homecoming chair for the Student Alumni Association. Currently the ASUO program outreach director, he was appointed to the UO Conduct Hearings Board that deals with violations of the UO Student Conduct Code.
Danielson is also a founding member of the UO chapter of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.
Paul Olum Award
This award, a trophy, honors Paul Olum, the 13th UO president, who retired in 1989. The award, established in 1995, is sponsored by the UO Alumni Association. It recognizes the graduating senior who best exemplifies Olums qualitiesacademic excellence, integrity and concern for people and dedication to the universitys welfare.
Paul Olum Award honoree Heidi Nikole Smith, a senior general science major with minors in chemistry and biology, is the daughter of Anne and Gary Smith, 11275 S.W. Walnut St., Tigard.
Smith received Gerlinger Cup and a Bowerman Scholarship last year and has been a member of both Friars and Mortar Board honor societies since 1999. She also has been vice president of the Golden Key Honor Society and was the student-athlete representative on the UO Intercollegiate Athletics Committee.
Wilson Cup
This award, established in 1991 in honor of Shirley Wilson, who was then dean of students, recognizes a senior student whose outstanding leadership and willingness to challenge conventional thought has stimulated awareness of and fostered education in the areas of social and cultural issues.
Elliott Paul Dale, this years Wilson Cup recipient, is a senior planning, public policy and management major and the son of Barbara Brinkerhoff, 1024 82nd Ave., N.E., Medina, Wash.
Dale is a justice of the ASUO Constitution Court and has been a UO Ambassador since January. He is a founding member and officer of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, was president of the Interfraternity Council and has chaired the Select 2000 Board of Directors since November 1999. Dale also was selected for listing in the 2000 edition of "Whos Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."
AAUW Senior Recognition Award
This award, a certificate, is presented to outstanding senior women by the Oregon State Division of the American Association of University Women. It is based on scholarship, character, personality, contributions to campus and community life and potential for future growth.
Norine Anne Madden, a senior Robert D. Clark Honors College student majoring in history and general science with minors in biology and chemistry, is the daughter of John and Norine Madden, 3306 King Edwards Court, Eugene.
The president of the Mortar Board senior honor society, Madden has been vice president of the Presidential Student Scholars Association. She is the preceptorship chair of Asklepiads, an honor society for pre-medical students.
In addition, Madden is a member of the Friends of the Eugene Public Library and is a volunteer at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.
Emerald Athletic Award
This award, a plaque sponsored by the UO Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Oregon Daily Emerald student newspaper since 1951, honors a UO student-athlete based on outstanding achievements in athletics, scholarship and citizenship.
A.D. Smith, receiving the Emerald Athletic Award, is a graduate student in the Master of Business Administration program and a resident of 4997 Morely Loop, Eugene. A 1999 graduate of the Lundquist College of Business with a degree in business administration, he won the Harry Ritchie Award three years straight as the top scholar-athlete on the UO mens basketball team. Smith, the team co-captain and second-leading scorer with 15.3 points per game, led the 1999-2000 Ducks in rebounding and field goal accuracy. He was a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII selection and was named to this years third-team GTE Academic All-America squad.
Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy
This award, established in 1955, recognizes a UO student-athlete for excellence in athletics, scholarship and citizenship. It is named for a former UO football and track star who died in an industrial accident while a UO student.
Shaquala Williams, recipient of the Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy, is a sophomore communication studies pre-major and the daughter of Betty Clay, 721 7th St., Lake Oswego. In
1998-99, Williams not only earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors, but also a spot on the All-Pac-10 first team, and she was named an Honorable Mention All-America selection by the Associated Press. In her second season, Williams led the UO team in free throw and three-point field goal percentages and was second in steals. Her outstanding play helped Oregon womens basketball win the Pac-10 Championship two years in a row and earned her honors as Pac-10 Player of the Year, a position on the All-Pac-10 first team and District VIII Kodak All-America selection.
Jackson Award
This award, a trophy, recognizes a senior woman for athletic ability, inspiration to other athletes, scholarship and leadership. It was established in 1981 and is named for Muriel K. and Ross E. Jackson. Muriel Jackson was the UO assistant vice president for administration until her retirement in 1991.
Jackson Award recipient Anika Heuser, a graduate student in business administration, is the daughter of Birgitt and Hans-Walter Heuser, Wuppertal, Germany. A member of the UO womens golf team, Heuser completed her senior season with a 77.8 average. She tied for 11th in the 1999-2000 Pac-10 conference championships with a season-low 225 strokes and tied for 21st at the NCAA West Regional tournament. In 1997-98, she earned Academic All-America honors and was a first-team All-Academic selection for the Pac-10. Heusers career includes first-place finishes at the 1996-97 Minnesota Invitational and at the 1997-98 Peg Barnard Invitational tournaments.
