UO GRADUATE STUDENTS RECEIVE SERVICE AWARDS

EUGENE–Three University of Oregon graduate students were honored for their service and leadership during the annual Family Weekend All-University Awards luncheon on May 20.

The trio– Mitchel Wilkinson and Cynthia Stenger of Eugene, and Kathleen Sullivan of Henderson, Nev.–received the 2000 Graduate Service Award in recognition for their academic merit and outstanding service to the community and university.

The award, jointly sponsored by the Graduate School and the Office of Student Life, was established six years ago to recognize graduate students who have succeeded in merging education and service. A subcommittee of the Graduate Council and representatives of the UO Graduate School are responsible for selecting recipients each year.

Wilkinson, a doctoral student in education and policy management, is the son of Ayako Wilkinson, 220 Braeburn, Eugene, and Gene Wilkinson. Director of the Springfield Indian Education program, Wilkinson is the recipient of a UO Centurion Award and a UO Office of Multicultural Affairs Leadership Award. He volunteered with the UO Many Nations Longhouse Committee, is associate director of the Center for Indigenous Cultural Survival and was co-director of the UO Native American Student Union.

Stenger, a master’s degree student in linguistics, is the daughter of Robert Stenger, 3122 Sunny Lane, Louisville, Ky., and Johanna Parkes, 8618 Mustang Dr., Naples, Fla. A Graduate Teaching Fellow for the Academic English for International Students Program, Stenger is a member of the Eugene Chamber Singers and the Eugene Motet Singers. She has volunteered as publicity chair for the Linguistic Olympics coordinating committee, participated in planning 1998 World AIDS Day and was a panelist for the Graduate Teaching Fellow Orientation.

Sullivan, a doctoral student in English, is the daughter of Lee Sullivan, 414 Cindy Place, Henderson, Nev. A member of the Women’s Studies Graduate Teaching Fellow Selection Committee, Sullivan is the recipient of a research grant from the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society. Sullivan has coordinated undergraduate writing workshops for film courses, participated as a mentor for the English department’s Graduate Teaching Fellow teacher-training program and was a facilitator for a Women’s Studies course.
