Detailed information about each honored student follows the summary listing of recipients and their hometowns.EUGENETwenty-four University of Oregon students received Deans Awards for Service at the annual Family Weekend All-University Awards luncheon on Saturday, May 20.
Winners of this years awards in recognition of their "exceptional contributions of service" include Amy Juve of Aloha; Sylvia Gil and Hong Tran, both of Beaverton; Jennifer Cornet, Autumn DePoe, Norine Madden, Jason Mak and Daniel Pierson, all of Eugene; Jose Alonso Oliveros of Independence; Jessica Sanders of Jacksonville; William Bankhead and Kari Skoog, both of Lake Oswego; Mitra Anoushiravani of Milwaukie; Kevin Reichelt of Ontario; Wylie Chen and Renesa Tucker-Fair, both of Portland; and Rachelle Pavao of Salem.
Also honored were Daniel Reid of South San Francisco, Calif.; Jessica Timpany of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Javier Hernandez of Sun Valley, Calif.; Katy Ho of Honolulu, Hawaii; Bryan Orthel of Filer, Idaho; Sarah Jacobson of Los Alamos, N.M.; and Spencer Hamlin of Bellevue, Wash.
Juve, a senior psychology major, is the daughter of Eric Juve, 21750 S.W. Rock Rd., and Terry and Dion Kerr, 17759 S.W Meadowbrook Way, all of Aloha. Juve is the student director of UO Orientation and the recipient of a Centurion Award.
Gil, a senior political science major, is the daughter of Valerie Rose, 6000 S.W Merno Dr.,
Apt. 4, Beaverton. Gil is the internal director of MEChA, the UO Chicano student union, and is coordinator of GANAS, a mentoring and tutoring program at Eugenes Kennedy Middle School. She also is the recipient of an Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Award.
Tran, a senior political science and sociology major, is the daughter of Vinh Tran and Diana Nguyen, 17998 N.W Cambray St., Beaverton. Tran is the multicultural advocate for the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, serves on the Multicultural Center board and is a member of the Friars and Mortar Board honor societies.
Cornet, a senior educational studies major, is the daughter of Barbara Cornet, 872 Arlington Ave., Berkeley, Calif., and Stephen Cornet, 3521 Grand Ave., Oakland, Calif. The recipient of a Centurion Award, Cornet is student coordinator of the September Experience and Freshman Seminars programs and was a ConDUCKtour guide. She has been a College of Education peer adviser and a practicum student at Eugenes Fairfield and Springfields Page elementary schools.
DePoe, a senior political science major, is the daughter of Ronda and the late John DePoe, 4949 Cone Ave., Eugene. DePoe is an active member of the American Indian Movement and Students for a Free Tibet. She is a former Oregon Daily Emerald student activities reporter, editorial board members and photographer, and she chairs the KWVA board, having been a news reporter, disk jockey and promotions assistant for student radio station.
Madden, a senior history and general science major, is the daughter of John and Norine Madden, 3306 King Edwards Court, Eugene. Madden is the president of the Mortar Board senior honor society, preceptorship chair for Asklepiads pre-medicine honor society and a volunteer at the Sacred Heart Medical Center emergency department.
Mak, a senior general science and ethnic studies major, is the son of Rick and Margaret Mak, 1597 Hackamore Way, Eugene. Mak is the diversity affairs coordinator for the UO Office of Student Academic Affairs, ASUP diversity recruitment and retention coordinator and the webmaster for the UO Institute of Molecular Biology.
Pierson, a senior architecture major, is the son of Linda Pierson, 38536 Scravel Hill Rd. N.E, Albany, and Charles Pierson, 6940 Firetower Rd., Rhinelander, Wisc. Pierson is undergraduate coordinator for Freshman Interest Groups, webmaster for the Student Alumni Association and a member of the Friars and Mortar Board honor societies.
Oliveros, a senior planning, public policy and management, and sociology major, is the son of Pedro and Virginia Oliveros, 388 S. 7th St., Independence. Oliveros is a volunteer for the Gateway to the Future and the two-time recipient of a UO Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Award.
Sanders, a senior art history major, is the daughter of William and Helene Sanders, 443 Conestoga Dr., Jacksonville. Sanders is student co-director of the UO Ambassador Program, community relations chair for the Student Alumni Association and the recipient of a UO Centurion Award.
Bankhead, a senior environmental studies major, is the son of Robert and Martha Bankhead, 17709 Hill Way, Lake Oswego. The student coordinator of honors and awards, Bankhead participates in College Bowl, is a member of the UO Outdoor Pursuits Leadership program and is the past president and senior adviser of the Golden Key National Honor Society.
Skoog, a senior public relations major, is the daughter of Steve and Karen Skoog, 13561 S.W. Streamside Dr., Lake Oswego. Formerly the president of the Panhellenic Council, Skoog serves on the Associated Students Presidents Advisory Council, is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and received an Arlyn E. Cole Memorial Scholarship from the School of Journalism and Communication.
Anoushiravani, a sophomore theater arts and political science major, is the daughter of Morteza and Theresa Anoushiravani, 15711 S.E Creswain Ave., Milwaukie. Anoushiravani is vice president of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, Erb Memorial Union Board executive representative and chairs the U.S. Student Associations People of Middle Eastern Descent Caucus.
Reichelt, a senior psychology and biology major, is the son of Gary and Bonnie Reichelt, 518 Reiter Dr., Ontario. Reichelt is president of the Student Alumni Association and student director of UO Orientation.
Chen, a senior planning, public policy and management major, is the son of David and Debbie Chen, 2525 N.W. 141st Place, Portland. Chen is president of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, a director of the Oregon Student Association and student representative on the UO Foundation board of trustees.
Tucker-Fair, a senior communication disorders and sciences major, is the daughter of Sonya Y. Tucker, 15828 N.E Eugene Court, Portland. Tucker-Fair is a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, sings with and choreographs performances of the Gospel Ensemble and is the recipient of an Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Award.
Pavao, a senior sociology major, is the daughter of Carol Iverson, 4110 Auburn Rd. N.E., Salem, and Willard Pavao. Formerly a mentor for the UO Office of Multicultural Affairs, Pavao serves on the Race Task Force, is a UO residence life assistant and was external director of the Native American Student Union.
Reid, a senior political science major, is the son of Timothy and Janet Reid, 412 Avalon Dr., South San Francisco, Calif. A former student senator, Reid served on the Erb Memorial Union board of directors and was vice president for community service and philanthropic activities of the Interfraternity Council.
Timpany, a senior political science, and planning, public policy and management major, is the daughter of Don Timpany, 2294 Vista del Sol, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Christine Piper, 18600 Blackberry Lane, Meadow Vista, Calif. Timpany is president of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon Student Senate, serves on the Associated Students Presidents Advisory Council and is the recipient of a UO Centurion Award.
Hernandez, a senior international studies and environmental studies major, is the son of Arcelia Hernandez, 10751 Wixom St., Sun Valley, Calif. Hernandez is co-director and program organizer for the UO Multicultural Center, volunteered with Reach for Success and is the recipient of an Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Award.
Ho, a senior public relations major, is the daughter of Kwok Wai and Kathy Ho, 1947 Alaeloa St., Honolulu, Hawaii. Co-chair of 2000 University Day, Ho participates in the UO Ambassador Program, is a UO Student Orientation Staff member and was coordinator for the Freshman Interest Group and Peer Mentor programs.
Orthel, a senior architecture major, is the son of Gerald and Judy Orthel, 3604 B North 2100 East, Filer, Idaho. Co-chair of the 2000 Homecoming Ball, Orthel participates in the UO Ambassador Program and is the recipient of a School of Architecture and Allied Arts Deans Award.
Jacobson, a senior geology major, is the daughter of Abram and Carole Jacobson, 315 Valle del Sol, Los Alamos, N.M. A former intern with the Oregon AFL-CIO, Jacobson is co-coordinator of the UO Survival Center and volunteers for the UO Human Rights Alliance.
Hamlin, a senior political science major, is the son of Laurie Hamlin, 9411 N.E 14th St., Bellevue, Wash. A UO diversity summer intern, he is vice president of the UO Student Senate.
