EUGENE–More than two dozen University of Oregon students and faculty of color received special recognition for their hard work and dedication at the 2000 OMA Awards and Graduation Ceremony, hosted May 19 by the UO Office of Multicultural Affairs during Spring Family Weekend.

Five students–Hong Tran, Hilary Davis, Teresa Garcia, Jose Alonso Oliveros and Renesa Tucker-Fair–were named recipients of this year’s Jewel Hairston Bell awards, each of which includes a $500 prize.

Maria Navales, a senior business administration major of 1513 Adams, Milpitas, Calif., received the Andersen Consulting Diversity Scholarship. The $1,000 award is based on academic achievement, leadership and need.

Twenty other students garnered Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Awards in recognition of their academic success, leadership and campus involvement.

In addition to the student awards, faculty members Anselmo Villanueva, an adjunct professor of educational leadership, and Kenneth Kempner, an associate professor of educational leadership, technology and administration, each received Outstanding Faculty Awards to honor their commitment to working with students of color and increasing ethnic and racial diversity at the university.
