EUGENEThe Oregon Daily Emerald board of directors has named Jack Clifford as the
2000-2001 editor-in-chief of the independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon.
Managing editor of the award-winning paper since last winter, Clifford recently oversaw the hiring of associate editors and other newsroom staff members who will carry out the news and editorial policies he will set when he assumes his new duties at the start of Summer Term in mid-June. He replaces current editor Laura Cadiz, a graduating senior news-editorial journalism major.
Clifford is a third-year sociology major of 290 E. 37th Ave., Eugene. He is the son of the late Theresa and Paul Clifford, and the brother of Rayne Boggs of Tallahassee, Fla. Before he moved to Eugene in the summer of 1996, he worked 11 years as production manager for The Florida Flambeau, an independent newspaper that focuses its coverage on the Florida State University.
After moving to Eugene, Clifford became sports editor, arts editor and finally editor-in-chief of The Torch, the Lane Community College campus newspaper. When he transferred to the University of Oregon, he began work as an Emerald reporter and then took over last fall as editor of Pulse, the papers weekly entertainment and arts section.
"Jack has a great deal of newspaper writing and editing experience," says Larry Tergesen, UO assistant director of business affairs who chairs the Emerald board of directors. "Also, he has good people skills and good ideas."
Clifford says he will not impose big changes in the Emerald during his leadership.
"The Emerald has been a publication for 100 years, and for me to expect to come in and make radical changes would be arrogant on my part," he says, noting the editor should listen to his or her staff so that any necessary changes can be made.
Clifford indicates he would like to provide UO students a greater sense of their relationship to the world through enhanced coverage of national and international news in the Emerald. In addition, he says the Emerald will continue its coverage of the ASUO because "students want to hear about how the student government works."
Indicating he would like to see the Emerald staff reflect the diversity of the community, Clifford also says he will continue the efforts of former editors-in-chief Ryan Frank and Laura Cadiz in bringing more diversity to the staff of editors and reporters.
