EUGENE–Nine undergraduate students at the University of Oregon Department of Dance will present dances at "Ground Zero: Reinventing Dance in the Year 2000," the annual Spring Student Dance Concert, on May 18—20.

Performances will begin at 8 p.m. each evening in the Dougherty Dance Theatre on the third floor of Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University St. Seating is limited.

Choreographic inspiration for the new works range from circular unity and flamenco to lunar/tidal involvement and the beauty of every day movements.

Among the three senior projects set to debut in the concert is "Saturated" by Sarah Baker of Coos Bay. This dance evokes the image of rich liquid movement giving rise to an intense yet serene feeling.

Researching Billie Holiday sparked the creation of "The Long Night of Lady Day" by Sara Lybarger of Alliance, Neb. The trio uses three separate pieces of music and is inspired by the life and music of the famous jazz singer.

Celeste Peterson, of Battle Lake, Minn., based much of her piece titled, "Hoo Yoo War," on music by Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, and the Walt Whitman poem, "Out from Behind This Mask (To Confront a Portrait)."

Other choreographers contributing to the show are Laura Nash of Bend; Dawn Doss Tuman of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Katherine Nauman of Los Gatos, Calif.; Erin Landaker of Yreka, Calif.; Stephanie Butcher of Auburn, Wash.; and Pei-Yi Cheng of Taoyuan, Taiwan.

With faculty advisement, the presenting choreographers not only created the dances, but were also responsible for the audition, publicity, fund raising, costumes and many other elements required to produce the show.

Tickets costing $6 for general admission and $3 for students will be available for purchase at the door at 7 p.m. prior to each performance. Seating will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Dougherty Dance Theatre is wheelchair accessible. Due to other on-campus events, campus-area parking may be limited.
