Details about the award winners and their achievements follow the listing provided below that identifies recipients and their hometowns.EUGENEThirteen University of Oregon student parents received recognition on Saturday, May 20, during the annual Family Weekend All-University Awards luncheon for concurrently making significant contributions to the university while fulfilling the demanding responsibilities of parenting.
Through these awards, the Office of the Dean of Student Life and the Office of Human Resources, in conjunction with the campus Child Care and Family Support Committee, recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding service to the university and their communities, while at the same time being devoted parents. Recipients are honored for distinguishing themselves by the breadth of their campus and community service and labor of love as parents.
The recipients of Student Parent awards included Jessica Michele Ellingson of Brownsville and Lesa Maureen Conlon, Michelle Hart, Valerie Jean Hoglan, Jennifer Lyn Marquez, Shawna Kathleen Miller, Heather Ann Rayhorn, Darlene Joyce Smith, Amanda Leigh Stout, Brenda L. Tuomi, Rachel Jane Turner and Kathleen Ann Workman, all of Eugene.
Jessica Ellingson, a senior interior architecture major, is the daughter of Michele L. Gerig, 37766 Northern Dr., Brownsville, and Micheal W. Ellingson, 14618 97th Ave. Court, N.W., Gig Harbor, Wash. Ellingson was a kids workshop coordinator for the Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability (HOPES) conference. A teaching assistant in the beginning architectural design studio in the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts, she was the recipient of a Bartholomew Architecture scholarship.
Lesa Conlon, a senior Spanish major, is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Montgomery, 2750 Villa Way, Springfield. Conlon is a volunteer teacher of beginning Spanish for church missionaries and others and also has volunteered in the Spanish immersion program for International High, Monroe Middle School and Buena Vista Elementary School. She participated in the missionary "Mission to Mexico" during March 1999 and 2000.
Michelle Hart, a junior educational studies major, is the daughter of Terry and Judy Hart, 5351 S.W. Joshua St., Tualatin. A volunteer in the Spencer View Co-op Childcare Center, Hart also volunteers for Eugenes Harris and Buena Vista elementary schools and has been a peer adviser for the College of Education.
Valerie Hoglan, a senior psychology major with a minor in womens studies, is the daughter of Chris Hoglan, 3757 Hawthorne Ave., Eugene, and Hugh Hoglan, 3942 Elfin Ave., Louisville, Ky. Coordinator of the Women in Transition Program for the ASUO Womans Center. she has been a school counseling intern at South Eugene High School and was a research assistant in the UO developmental psychology lab.
Jennifer Marquez, a senior accounting and psychology major, is the daughter of Marilyn Deedon, 2686 Windsor Circle W., Eugene. Marquez is the first member of her family to attend college and influenced her mother and younger brother to continue their education. She has been involved in her childrens school activities and in scouting.
Shawna Miller, a junior sociology and pre-journalism major, is the daughter of Diane Grannis, 5034 S.W. Vermont, Portland, and Richard Miller, 31540 German Lane, Westlake Village, Calif. Miller is a Spencer View Co-op Childcare Center parent and has been a full time nanny.
Heather Rayhorn, a senior journalism major, is the daughter of Sue Saint Onge, 4675 Cody Ave., Eugene, and Bob Kern, P.O. Box 711019, Los Angeles, Calif. A volunteer for Girls Inc., Rayhorn is a copy editor at the Oregon Daily Emerald and is a news clerk for the Springfield News. She was an art director for Allen Hall Advertising, a student-run advertising agency in the School of Journalism and Communication.
Darlene Smith, a junior educational studies major, is the daughter of Barbara and LeRoy Smith, 930 S.W. Greenwood, Grant Pass. A hospice volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital, Smith has assisted teachers in the classroom and with behavior management at the Springfield High School Teen Parent Program. She also volunteers at the Patterson School Hear Start Program in Eugene.
Amanda Stout, a junior biology major, is the daughter of Susan Stevens, 21645 S.W. Old Pacific Highway West, Sherwood, and Randy Stevens, 26060 Canyon Creek Rd., Wilsonville. Stout is a charter member of the UO Student Parent Association and has been co-manager at Matthews Garden, part of Eugenes Community Gardens Program.
Brenda L. Tuomi, a junior educational studies major, is the daughter of Leo Jeffers, P.O. Box 974, Marcola. A Mortar Board junior scholar, Tuomi has worked with Birth To Three. She also assisted with the Success In the Middle Conference for female middle school students and volunteered for Take Your Daughter To Work Day.
Rachel Turner, a senior English major, is the daughter of Rex W. Turner, 2058 Cleveland, Eugene. Turner has been working in the EMU Childcare and Development Centers.
Kathleen Workman, a junior planning, public policy and management major, is the daughter of Merrie Thornton, P.O. Box 189, Ocean Shores, Wash. The ASUO nontraditional student advocate, Workman helped found and chairs the UO Student Parents Association and served on the parent council of the EMU Child Care and Development Centers. She also attended the U.S. Student Association Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., as a delegate and has been a member of the Family Housing Board.
