EUGENE–Marjorie Sandor, the winner of the 2000 Oregon Book Award for literary non-fiction, will give the final reading of the University of Oregon Creative Writing Program’s 2000-2001 reading series on Wednesday, May 23.

Sandor’s free public reading will begin at 8 p.m. in the Browsing Room of the Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid St. A book signing will follow.

Sandor is the author of two books, "A Night of Music," which is a collection of short stories, and "The Night Gardener," a collection of essays. Her work has appeared in such prestigious journals as The Georgia Review, The Agni Review, Shenandoah and The New York Times Magazine.

Her stories also have been selected as among the best in the country, chosen for inclusion in Best American Short Stories in both 1985 and 1988, for The Pushcart Prize XIII and for the Best of Beacon 1999.

In 1998, Sandor, who teaches creative writing at Oregon State University, won the Rona Jaffe Foundation Award for short fiction.

Critics have noted Sandor’s adeptness at fluid language and strong characters, as well as her ability to engage the reader in the world around her.

"Gracefully, she lures us up and down her streams of thought with simple yet distinctive language as she investigates the natural world and seeks to define her own place in it," stated a review from The New York Times.
