Its University Day! At this 12th annual event, volunteers will spend the day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. cleaning, painting, planting flowers, spreading bark dust and completing other campus cleaning and beautification projects. At noon in the courtyard of Streisinger Hall, 1390 Franklin Blvd., UO President Dave Frohnmayer will dedicate a bench in memory of Aaron Novick. Founder of the UO Institute of Molecular Biology, Novick was a renowned scientist whose work on the Manhattan Project during World War II so disturbed him that he spent the rest of his life campaigning against nuclear arms. Novick, who died in December 2000 at age 81, was dean of the UO Graduate School from 1971 to 1980 and head of the Department of Biology until his retirement in 1984. University Day student director Jenise Williams encourages participants to demonstrate their pride in the university, but also to have fun and enjoy the festive atmosphere of University Day. Besides, she says, campus needs to look nice as many parents and other family members are expected to show up May 1820 for Spring Family Weekend. Student leaders organized the annual clean-up in cooperation with Student Life and Facilities Services staff. Headquarters for participant sign-up and work assignments will be near the Pioneer Father statue on East 13th between Fenton and Friendly halls. Those working at least one hour will receive a free souvenir T-shirt.
