Media Access: FROHNMAYER TO SURPRISE PROFESSOR WITH TEACHING AWARD

WHAT University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer will make a surprise visit to a UO faculty member to bestow the 1997 Herman award for distinguished teaching. Frohnmayer will be available after the award presentation to answer questions about this and other topics.

WHEN 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 27

WHERE Frohnmayer will depart from his office, Room 110, Johnson Hall, 1098 E. 13th Ave., for an unannounced drop in visit to the faculty member's classroom for the surprise announcement and presentation. The name of the honoree will be announced at that time.

BACKGROUND

The Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching honors senior faculty members who have achieved outstanding records as teachers. Recipients, chosen on the recommendation of faculty members and students, receive $2,000, which will be added to their annual base salaries in subsequent years. They also receive a crystal apple and are honored at spring commencement. Last year's recipient of this award was Carol T. Silverman, associate professor of anthropology.
