May 5, 1997 Contact John R. Crosiar (541) 346-3135 EUGENE--The Oregon Daily Emerald board of directors has named Sarah Kickler as editor-in-chief of the award-winning independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon. A sophomore in the School of Journalism and Communication, Kickler will assume her duties officially on June 10 for the 1997-98 academic year. She replaces current editor-in-chief Steven Asbury of Eugene. Kickler is the daughter of Fred and Ann Boss, 1211 Bayberry Rd., Lake Oswego, Ore., and Ron and Maureen Kickler, 2126 N. San Antonio St., Pearland, Texas. Kickler will start her new paid, part-time position with newspaper experience dating back to her high school years. She was on the staff of Lake Views at Lake Oswego High School for three years, culminating in her position as co-editor-in-chief of the newspaper during her senior year. At the Emerald, Kicker got her start as copy editor last fall. By winter term, she had been promoted to copy chief. Joe Kidd, chairman of the Emerald board of directors, says board members saw Kickler's involvement in the day-to-day operations of the Emerald as a valuable quality. Kidd, a business reporter for The Register-Guard in Eugene, says that experience will free her to do more with the paper. "She'll have more time to be creative with what she wants to do with the paper's news coverage, staffing structure, layout and design, and other `big picture' aspects of the Emerald," Kidd says. Kickler is looking forward to "being involved in the whole process of putting the paper together." She is also planning to "go more in depth in campus issues that affect our readers." Kidd, who serves as a resource to the Emerald editor, says that Kickler's enthusiasm and a range of other qualities made her a successful candidate for the position. "She's articulate, has worked for newspapers since her high school days and has long-range goals to become an editor at a major daily newspaper," he says. "I think she'll be a great editor at the Emerald." -30- #H-2226/L,Hometown/no
