EUGENE--Twenty-three University of Oregon students will receive Dean's Awards for Service at the annual Parents' Weekend All-University Awards luncheon on Saturday, May 17. Winners of this year's awards in recognition of their "exceptional contributions of service" include Cynthia Ryan of Aurora; Jennifer Davis, Julius Darmali, Siamak Fooladi, Preeti Nair and Jack Orozco of Eugene; Kimberly Guevara of Grants Pass; Rebecca Peatow of Hermiston; Mario Garza of Hubbard; Douglas Baker, Jennifer Huegli and Kirsten Wall of Portland; Megan Fowler and David Lewis of Salem; Glen Banfield of Sisters; Nancy Hay of Tigard; and Susan Trafton of Wilsonville. Also honored are Benno Lyon of Berkeley, Calif.; Andrea Adams of Daly City, Calif.; Lori Nelson of La Habra, Calif.; La Nea "Dee" Eason of Los Angeles, Calif.; Lynne Mahan-Sweet of Redding, Calif.; and William Washburn of Honolulu, Hawaii. -oOo- Ryan, a senior public relations major, is the daughter of Michael and Jean Ryan, 10008 Donald Rd. N.E., Aurora. She is currently a member of the UO's New Student Telephone Project in which she helps recruit potential UO students via personal telecommunications. She answers questions regarding student life, the Eugene community and the college experience. She is also currently the Oregon Special Olympics Summer Games marketing director, and secretary for the Greek Life Organization Renewal Fund Advisory Board. She is listed in the Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities for 1997. Davis, a senior journalism major, is the daughter of Bob and Laoni Davis, 2460 Willamette St., Eugene. She is a member of the Friars senior honor society, and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She is currently the student coordinator for the Managing College Outcomes Project, which is a three-person team responsible for the development, planning and implementation of a new university program/class. She was also secretariat coordinator for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic games in 1996. Darmali, a senior business administration major, is the son of Rudyanto Darmali, Jakarta, Indonesia. He is president of the International Students Association for 1996-1997. He is also a member of the board of directors for the Multicultural Center of the Associated Students of the University Of Oregon and president of the UO's chapter of the Golden Key honor society. He was a UO Centurion Award recipient in 1996, and he is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 1997. Fooladi, a senior journalism major, is the son of Shoukooh Kayhani, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fooladi is currently a member of the School of Journalism and Communication's Advertising Team and is also chair of the International Students Advisory Committee. This past summer, he was the video director for the Point O'Pines Camp for girls in New York, where he instructed girls ages 10-15 years-old about video production. Nair, a senior psychology major, is the daughter of Chandran Nair, Selangor, Malaysia. She works with the CORE Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program in the UO Office of Student Life. She is co-director of the International Students Association, an International Peer Assistant, where she assists with international student orientation, and she is a member of the Women's Center Advisory Board for the Associated Students of the University Of Oregon. She received the International Student Award in 1996. Orozco, a senior journalism major, is the son of Anita Rojas, 3150 University Ave., Eugene, and Rafael Orozco, P.O. Box 2757, Kodiak, Alaska. He is a member of the UO's Recycling Program, a member of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan), and a staff member of the Race Task Force. He was a Youth for Justice intern in fall 1996, where he organized a delegation to travel to San Francisco to work to develop youth activism and skills. Guevara, a senior political science and psychology major, is the daughter of Pamela Guevara, 1002 Sharon Dr., Grants Pass. She the chairperson for both the Erb Memorial Union and the Student Health Advisory Committee, and she was chosen to serve on the Associated Students Presidential Advisory Committee for the 1996-1997 academic year. She is a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team, and a volunteer for Birth to Three, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse through parental education and support. She was honored with the Greek Centurion Award for academic excellence and campus/community involvement in the spring of 1996. Peatow, a senior political science major, is the daughter of Sally Mae Peatow, Rt. 3, Box 3652A, Hermiston, and Anton Weisert-Peatow, 2002 Cascade Place W., Tacoma, Wash. Peatow is an intern for the Unwanted Sexual Behavior Task Force, a volunteer coordinator for the Associated Students of the University of Oregon Women's Center, and a volunteer for Students for Choice. Garza, a senior English major, is the son of Jose and Maria Garza, 4109 3rd St., Hubbard. Garza is currently a member of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan) and was the UO spokesperson at the national MEChA conference in Berkeley, Calif., in 1995. He was a panel member at Churchill High School's Diversity Day this past March. He was also elected to the Associated Students of the University of Oregon's Program Finance Committee in the spring of 1996, when he also received an Office of Multicultural Affairs Excellence Award. Baker, a senior political science major, is the son of Dennis and Pamela Baker, 4255 N.W. Columbia Ave., Portland. Baker is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, a student senator and member of the UO Bookstore's Board of Directors. He is also a UO Alumni Association Student Ambassador. He is a member of the Friars senior honor society, and he received the Koyl Cup Award in 1996, which is given to a junior man showing the most progress in leadership, service and academic achievement. Huegli, a senior English major, is the daughter of James Huegli, 1 S.W. Columbia, Suite 790, and Louise Huegli, 3015 S.W. Ralieghview Dr., both of Portland. She is currently an EMU Program Representative and a member of the Associated Students Presidential Advisory Council. She was a member of the UO Debate Team from fall 1994 through fall 1996, and this past summer, she interned in the office of Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse. Wall, senior anthropology and Spanish major, is the daughter of Joan Wall, 7155 S.W. Alden St., Portland. She is vice president of Delta Delta Delta sorority, secretary for Mortar Board honor society and an office assistant at the UO's Career Center. She is member of Golden Key honor society, a Mortar Board Junior Scholar, a UO Centurion Award recipient, and listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She was voted Greek Woman of the Year in 1996. Fowler, a senior business management major, is the daughter of Joseph and Linda Fowler, 7556 Twin Fir Lane S., Salem. She is an active Friars senior honor society member, and scheduling co-chair for Mortar Board honor society. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity. She was a teaching assistant for the UO's Mentor Program during fall 1995, and she was 1994-1995 director of UO New Student Orientation. Lewis, a senior humanities major, is the son of Polly Lewis, 4834 Driftwood Court N.E., Salem. Lewis is currently the co-director of the Native American Student Union. He is an executive appointee to the Programs Finance Committee and a member of the board of directors of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon Multicultural Center. He was also on the UO Counseling Center's hiring committee. Banfield, a senior environmental studies major, is the son of Barbara Carrington, P.O. Box 2006, Sisters. He is currently vice president of the Associated Students of the University Of Oregon, a member of the President's Council on Race, and a member of the Associated Students Presidential Advisory Council. He is also a member of the Black Student Union. He was part of the Students Against Hate and Discrimination committee in 1996, a committee comprised of students from the ethnic student unions and university community that discussed courses of action on matters concerning racial discrimination. He is a member of Friars honor society and a UO Centurion Award Recipient in 1996. Hay, a senior English major, is the daughter of Geralyn Hay, 11012 S.W. Springwood Dr., Tigard, and Richard Hay, 3665 S.W. Cedar Hills Blvd., Beaverton. She is currently Freshman Seminars student coordinator and a UO Recreation Center User Group member, where she serves as a student representative in the design of the proposed new recreation center facility, as well as in the selection of an architect for the proposed renovation of Esslinger Hall. Trafton, a senior planning, public policy and management major, is the daughter of Betty Johnston, 8676 S.W. Mohawk Circle, Wilsonville. She is on the Board of Directors for the United States Student Association and a member of the Oregon State Higher Education Board for Underrepresented Minorities. She is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and she is a member of Friars honor society. Lyon, a senior environmental studies major, is the son of Marian Grebanien, 2323 McGee, Berkeley, Calif. He has been a teacher's assistant for four UO biology courses, a member of the UO Cultural Forum Events Crew, and a member of UO's Recycling Program. He also developed and taught a Wetlands curriculum for a fourth/fifth grade class at Willard Elementary School. Adams, a senior political science major, is the daughter of Don and Maria Adams, 6 Ardendal Dr., Daly City, Calif. Adams represents the Associated Students of the University of Oregon Multicultural Center on the Board of Directors for MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan) and is a member of the Task Force for Racial Diversity. She is also a student representative on the Ethnic Studies Search Committee that is reviewing candidates for a new Ethnic Studies director position for the 1997-1998 academic year. Nelson, a senior Spanish major, is the daughter of Janet Nelson, 2331 Thorne Ave., La Habra, Calif. She is a tutor for English-as-a-second-language students for the Lane County Literacy Council. She is also a tutor for the UO's High School Equivalency Program, where she helps adults of 17 years or older understand reading passages in Spanish. She is a recipient of the UO's Mother's Club Scholarship for the 1996-1997 academic year, and UO Centurion Award recipient in 1995. She is currently a receptionist for the Dean of Students Office/Office of Student Life. Eason, a senior journalism major, is the niece of Natalee Johnson, 850 S. Curson St., Los Angeles, Calif. Eason is currently the program director and program advocate for the Associated Students of the University of Oregon Multicultural Center and an office assistant for the Counseling Center. She was co-director of Project Saferide in 1996, which is a shuttle service for women after dusk, and advocated for survivors of rape and sexual assault. She is a member of the Women's Center Advisory Board for the Associated Students of the University Of Oregon, a member of the Black Student Union and the Black Women of Achievement. Mahan-Sweet, a senior journalism major, is the daughter of Nat and Bernita Mahan, 2011 Winchester Place, Redding, Calif. She has been coordinator for Women in Transition conferences for the Associated Students of the University Of Oregon Women's Center the past two years. She was also part of Centro Latino Americano in 1995-1996, where she taught English as a second language. She was asked to speak at the UO's Crisis Prevention Conference in winter 1997. Washburn, a senior political science major, is the son of Jackie D'Orazio, 1089 Kaumoku St., Honolulu, Hawaii. Washburn was the1995-1996 University Affairs Coordinator for the Associated Students of the University of Oregon .
