EUGENE--Fifteen University of Oregon students received 1997 International Student Awards in recognition of their leadership and volunteer work on campus and in the community during the annual Parents' Weekend All-University Awards Luncheon on May 17.

Winners of this year's awards include Dorren Boon Lee Ang, Marcelo Barros, Lee Yen Beh, Eugene Yat Sing Chung, Julius Darmali, Asha Mary John, Soon Bum Kwon, Luchen Li, Amita Malakar, Carlos Maza, Preeti Nair, Enrico Rumbayan, Daisuke Shizuya, Karen Susilo and Wayne Chung-Hua Wang.

The staff of the Office of International Education and Exchange selects the students for volunteer service that goes "above and beyond" their studies, according to Margo Ramsing, international student adviser.

PORTLAND--Karen Susilo, a sophomore fine arts major and office manager for the International Student Association. She contributed her artistic skills to International Night this year.

FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil--Marcelo Barros, a senior international studies major. He has held positions including resident assistant, student orientation leader and Career Center intern, and he is listed in the 1997 Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

SHIJIAZHUANG, China--Luchen Li, a doctoral degree student and graduate teaching fellow in English. Li is director of the Chinese Student Association.

KOWLOON, Hong Kong--Eugene Yat Sing Chung, a junior architecture major and a leader of the Hong Kong Student Association.

INDIA--Asha Mary John, a sophomore journalism pre-major, is the Associated Students of the University of Oregon International Liaison and coordinated the recent International Week on campus.

JAKARTA, Indonesia--Julius Darmali, a senior business administration major and co-director of the International Student Association.

INDONESIA--Enrico Rumbayan, a senior economics major and director of the Indonesian student group.

TOKYO, Japan--Daisuke Shizuya, a post baccalaureate pre-business administration major. Shizuya received wide media attention when he ran from the University of Oregon to the University of Washington during spring break this year to raise awareness about people with disabilities.

KOREA--Soon Bum Kwon, a junior business administration pre-major and officer in the Philippine student group who has been active in Eugene's Asian Celebration.

SELANGOR, Malaysia--Lee Yen Beh, a senior business administration major who has been vice president of the Malaysian Student Association and director of sales and advertising for the Oregon Daily Emerald student newspaper.

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia--Preeti Nair, a senior psychology major and co-director of the International Student Association.

LOPEZ MATEOS, Mexico--Carlos Maza, a junior major in business administration and international studies. Maza is a resident assistant and an international peer assistant.

KATHMANDU, Nepal--Amita Malakar, a sophomore environmental studies major. Malakar is public relations director for the International Student Association and an international peer assistant.

SINGAPORE, Singapore--Dorren Boon Lee Ang, a senior English major and director of the Singapore Student Association.

TAIWAN--Wayne Chung-Hua Wang, a junior geology major and director of the Taiwan Students Association.
