EUGENE--Thirty University of Oregon students this spring received membership invitations from the Ancient Order of Druids, a service honor society for juniors.

The new members, initiated May 28, were chosen for their scholarship, leadership and participation in campus activities, and for their willingness to serve the university and community. They were chosen from 62 qualified applicants.

The UO Ancient Order of Druids is based on the 600-year-old Order of Druids that was known for its interest in the spiritual and intellectual dimensions of life in Gaul and in Britain. By the 1700s, the Druids were focusing on increasing the bounds of knowledge and improving human faculties, a tradition of service carried on by the UO order, which emphasizes campus and community activities.

This year, Druids painted classrooms and cleaned up the grounds of Whitaker Elementary School, registered voters on campus during the Vote `96 campaign, planted flowers and power washed brick work during University Day, and worked with students during the UO Career Center's Internship Fair.

Druids also planted bushes, laid sod and pulled weeds at a local shelter care facility, and collected canned goods and money for Food and Fuel `96. Currently, they are organizing a clothes drive.

"They are an inspired group of students," said Druids adviser Beth Swank, a Career Center counselor. "They were accepted into the Druids because of their academic abilities and for their leadership within the community. In the group, they do even more community service."
