Friday, May 16--Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands UO jazz ensembles will give a special Parents' Weekend concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. Heading the concert is the award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor Steve Owen. Jazz Lab Band II and Jazz Lab Band III, directed by graduate students Pat Dixon and Nate Wooley, also will perform. The program will contain a wide selection of big band jazz, including compositions and arrangements by UO students and alumni. Saturday, May 17--Special Event: Medical Musicale Members of the Lane County medical community will set aside their scalpels and stethoscopes for an evening of music-making, as the School of Music presents "Medical Musicale," a benefit performance for the UO Piano Endowment Fund. Concert time is 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students, and they may be purchased at the door. The program consists of piano and vocal selections, including preludes by Rachmaninoff, mazurkas by Chopin, opera arias by Mozart and Delibes, songs by Faure and Brahms, and Gershwin's "Fantasy on Themes of Porgy and Bess" for two pianos. Performers include Dr. James Murdock and his daughter Katie, Dr. Jeffrey Robbins, Marieke Arpaia, retired physician Werner Meyn and Candace Syman-Degler, Dr. Robert Hacker, nurse Pauline Rughani, ophthalmic technician Patrick Witham and Dr. Regina McGlothlin.
The concert is also dedicated to the memory of Jean Akins, a UO music alumna and former medical transcriber in Eugene, who passed away last year. Monday, May 19--Faculty Artist Series: Katharine DeBoer, soprano; Greg Mason, piano Guest soprano Katharine DeBoer will be joined by UO faculty pianist Gregory Mason for a recital of 19th- and 20th-century vocal music. Concert time is 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens. The program includes Debussy's "Proses Lyriques," "Nocturnes" by Arnold Cooke, three songs by Franz Schubert and five songs by Rachmaninoff. DeBoer joined the faculty of the University of Nevada-Reno in 1995 as coordinator of vocal studies in the Department of Music. She has received critical acclaim for her appearances in concert with colleagues, university choirs, civic orchestras, regional opera and choral societies, and chamber ensembles, as well as in recital at home and abroad. A graduate of the University of Vermont, DeBoer earned her master's and doctoral degrees in vocal performance at the University of Illinois, where she studied with Mark Elyn. With her coach and renowned accompanist John Wustman, she performed songs of Franz Schubert on a 1990-97 United States tour. She recently appeared as a soloist at the prestigious Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and as guest artist at the Pitten Music Festival in Austria. Tuesday, May 20--Oregon Composers Forum The Oregon Composers Forum will present a program of new music by undergraduate student composers at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free. The program includes a wide variety of material, including music for string trio, string quartet, brass sextet, solo marimba, solo piano, vocal quartet, wind quintet, piano and voice, trombone trio and organ, and several mixed ensembles. Student composers include Arica Keyser, Derek Kane, Steph Greer, Matthew Turner, Joseph Kim, Angie Renich, Jeff Johnson, Anne Holt and Matthew Svoboda. Wednesday, May 21--Oregon Wind Ensemble The Oregon Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Robert Ponto, will give its spring concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. The program includes "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Inaugural Fanfare" by Aaron Copland; "Lincolnshire Posy" and "Gum-suckers March" by Percy Grainger; "Divertimento" by Vincent Persichetti; and the world premieres of "In the Vernacular" by Washington composer Gregory Youtz and of "Chapîtres Narcotiques" by UO student composer Wladimir Lopez. Ponto will be assisted on the program by graduate student conductors Timothy Vian and John Owen.
Thursday, May 22--University Symphony: Concerto Competition Concert The University Symphony, under the direction of Professor Wayne Bennett, will accompany three outstanding student soloists in its annual Concerto Concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. The soloists were selected from a school-wide competition last term, designed to showcase outstanding soloists in a formal symphony concert format. Featured on the concert will be a pianist, a vocalist and an oboist: * Shani Johnson, an undergraduate music performance major from Auburn, Wash., will perform Kalliwoda's "Concertina for Oboe." She is a student of J. Robert Moore. * Misook Yun, a doctoral student in vocal performance from Seoul, Korea, will sing "Chants d'Auvergne" by Canteloube. Yun was the district winner in the Metropolitan Opera Competition last winter. She is a student of Mark Beudert. * Siaw-Sing Koo, a doctoral piano student from Penang, Malaysia, will perform "Aubade for Piano and 18 Instruments" by Poulenc. She is a student of Dean Kramer. For the grand finale, the orchestra will perform the dramatic and popular "Symphony No. 5" by Dmitri Shostakovich. -30- #P-2209/A&E
