Friday, May 30--The Jazz Café Jazz combos from the School of Music's jazz studies program will give their final performance of the year at "The Jazz Café" at 8 p.m. in Room 186 of the Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and seniors. The program will include not only music by familiar jazz composers, but also a variety of original material and arrangements by student composers. Portland guitarist John Stowell will also sit in on a few numbers. The Jazz Café was created in 1995 to provide the jazz combos more of a cabaret atmosphere than the formal setting of Beall Concert Hall. Seating is around small tables, and light refreshments also will be available. Sunday, June 1--Chamber Musicale Student chamber ensembles will perform music at a Sunday afternoon "Chamber Musicale" beginning at 3 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. The program, built around some of the most celebrated composers of chamber music, includes a string quartet and a piano trio by Beethoven, sonatas for violin and piano by Mozart and Brahms, and three short pieces for woodwind quintet by Jacques Ibert. The concert is designed as a showcase for UO student musicians who excel at chamber repertoire.
Tuesday, June 3--UO Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus The UO Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus will share a concert beginning at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Admission is free. The concert will feature two songs by Johannes Brahms, as well as several 20th -century works--"Pavane for Spring" by Eugene Butler, "Three Love Songs" by James Mulholland and three pieces by UO Professor Hal Owen: "Night Herding Song," "All the Pretty Little Horses" and "Every Night When the Sun Goes In." The UO Women's Chorus is directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Jeanie Neven, and the Men's Chorus is directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Angelo Dias. Thursday, June 5--UO Symphonic Band, Campus Band and University Strings Two bands and a string ensemble will be featured in a spring concert beginning at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. The UO Symphonic Band and Campus Band, directed by Assistant Professor Sid Haton, will perform a variety of old and new works for wind ensemble, including "Welsh Variants" by James Curnow, "Japanese Prints" by Robert Jager, "Bushdance" by Ralph Hultgren, "Armenian Dances" by Alfred Reed and "His Honor," a march by Henry Fillmore. The University String Ensemble, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow John Owen, will perform "Divertimento" by Mozart and a new arrangement by UO graduate student Chris Mudd of a suite for two horns and strings by Telemann. -30- #P-2213/A&E
