UO GRAD'S SCULPTURE GRACES ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL
|
May 2, 1997 The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial being dedicated today (May 2) in Washington, D.C., includes a bronze presidential seal by Portland sculptor and University of Oregon graduate Tom Hardy. The Roosevelt Memorial Commission had asked Hardy, whose welded bronze sculptures are in museum collections throughout the United States, to create the piece which Hardy based on a seal for Roosevelt's 1933 presidential inauguration. Lawrence Fong, associate director of the UO Museum of Art, says it's appropriate that Hardy was chosen to work on the FDR memorial because of his long-standing advocacy for public art. Hardy's bronze seal is the only major piece of sculpture by a Northwest artist in Washington, D.C. Hardy graduated from the University of Oregon in 1942 with a Master of Fine Arts degree. The university owns several of Hardy's sculptures, including pieces at the UO Art Museum and in Lawrence Hall.
