HUGE FLOCK OF BIRDS PUTTING ON MAGNIFICENT SUNSET SHOW
|
May 5, 1997 Vaux's swifts are back in Eugene as part of their annual northward migration. "A flock of 2,000 to 3,000 migrating birds has taken up temporary residence in the chimney of a building on the University of Oregon campus, and each evening at sunset they put on a spectacular show," says Dan Gleason, a UO biology department staff member. "From a little before 8 p.m. until around 8:30 p.m., they circle the chimney in a great swirling cloud, then all of a sudden they funnel down into the chimney where they will stay through the night." Gleason, vice president of the Lane County Audubon Society, says the birds likely will be staying for only another week or two in the tall brick chimney of Agate Hall, 1787 Agate St. SOURCE: Dan Gleason, teaching laboratory preparer, Department of Biology, (541) 346-4535; e-mail, dgleason@oregon.uoregon.edu
