UO SENATE CONSIDERS RULES ON SEXUAL RELATIONS, ASSAULT

May 13, 1997

The University Senate this week will consider a motion to revise the Student Conduct Code regarding sexual misconduct and a proposed Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) concerning sexual or romantic relationships of faculty and staff with students they may supervise. The University Senate meets at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, in Room 110 of Fenton Hall, 1021 E. 13th Ave. The proposed changes to the Student Conduct Code include the description of sexual misconduct and definitions of rape and sexual assault. The proposal was the subject of a November public hearing on campus and is being presented to the Senate by the Student Conduct Committee. The senate also will vote on a new OAR, "Conflicts of Interest and Abuses of Power: Sexual or Romantic Relationships with Students." The proposed rule discourages faculty and staff from having sexual or romantic relationships with those students they supervise. The proposed rule also describes appropriate corrective measures the involved parties should take if such relationships do occur.
