Rakes, shovels, hoses and even a paint brush or two will sprout Thursday, May 15, on the University of Oregon campus as hundreds of students, staff and faculty roll up their collective sleeves to give the campus a thorough spring cleaning. It's University Day! At this annual event, volunteers will spend the day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. cleaning, painting, planting flowers, spreading bark dust and completing other campus beautification projects. About noon at the corner of University Street and Johnson Lane, the Friars honorary will install a plaque and dedicate a newly planted Green Mountain sugar maple tree in honor of Mary Hudzikiewicz. She retires in June after decades of organizing UO commencements and other campus and community projects. About 12:30 p.m. volunteers will gather in front of Fenton Hall, 1021 E. 13th Ave., to put finishing touches on the restored and relocated Class of 1920 fountain. Throughout the day, University Day volunteers also will clean and restore the Class of 1910 Senior Bench on Onyx Street opposite the main entrance of Straub Hall. About 3:30 p.m., children attending the Olum Child Development Center will plant flowers around their center at 1650 Columbia St. Those working at least one hour will receive a free commemorative T-shirt. Student director Eric Hudzikiewicz encourages participation based on pride in the university, "but what we really want is for everyone to have fun and enjoy the festive atmosphere of University Day," he says. Student leaders organized the annual clean-up in cooperation with Student Life and Facilities Services staff. Headquarters for participant sign-up and work assignments will be on East 13th between Chapman and Condon halls.
