ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK OFFERS GRAPHIC REMINDERS
|
May 20, 1997 A field of tombstones and a wrecked car at the University of Oregon seek to dramatize the deadly results of drinking and driving as the UO Student Health Center commemorates National Alcohol Awareness Week, May 19-23. The tombstones, placed on the Memorial Quad near Prince Lucien Campbell Hall, 1415 Kincaid St., will display students' reflections of people they knew who died in alcohol-related accidents. The car wreck will be located on East 13th Avenue between Condon and Chapman halls. "We wanted to create a display that illustrates the lethal consequences of irresponsible alcohol use," says Joanne Frank, Student Health Center health education director. "We hope this display will make people think before they drink and drive, particularly as we approach Memorial Day weekend, one the of the deadliest on the nation's highways." Other events scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, include a 5-kilometer "fun run" as well as a benefit concert by the local band Jacob Marley's Ghost. The run begins at 4 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave., and the concert begins at 5 p.m. at the same location.
