EUGENE--Twenty-six University of Oregon students this spring received membership invitations from the Ancient Order of Druids, a service honor society for juniors. The new members, initiated May 12, were chosen for their scholarship, leadership and participation in campus activities, and for their willingness to serve the university and community. The UO Ancient Order of Druids is based on the 600-year-old Order of Druids that was known for its interest in the spiritual and intellectual dimensions of life in Gaul and in Britain. By the 1700s, the Druids were focusing on increasing the bounds of knowledge and improving human faculties, a tradition of service carried on by the UO order, which emphasizes campus and community activities. This year, Druids donated carved pumpkins to elderly care homes in the community, volunteered at the Career Center career fairs, helped with the Easter egg hunt on the UO campus, and served dinner at the Eugene Mission.
