EUGENE--John M. Orbell, University of Oregon professor of political science, will deliver a free public lecture, "Cooperation: Promise-Making and Projecting Our Own Intentions," at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on the UO campus. Orbell was one of three Distinguished Professors--along with physicist Thomas Mossberg and Steven Shankman, professor of classics and English--honored this year by the University of Oregon College of Arts and Science. As part of the honor, each Distinguished Professor delivers a public lecture. Orbell is currently involved with several projects. One simulates the evolution of the "social brain." In particular, his studies examine the mind's capacity to recognize others' cooperative and competitive propensities and then to dissemble one's own propensities to be cooperative or competitive in the face of others' attempts to read them. Another project investigates the role of physical beauty in prompting cooperative behavior from others. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. in 1965. For information, call 346-3950. -30- #P-7348/Local
