EUGENE--Two powerful advocates for peace between Israel and Palestine--one an Israeli, the other a Palestinian--are joining forces Tuesday, May 19, to explore the role of women in the peace process in a lecture at the University of Oregon. Galia Golan, an internationally recognized scholar and a founder of the Israeli Peace Now movement, and Zahira Kamal, a feminist and political activist who helped organize the Palestinian Women's Peace Movement, will speak together on "Women and the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process." The free public talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100, Willamette Hall, 1371 E. 13th Ave. The Savage Endowment, the Oregon Humanities Center, the Honors College, the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, the Office of International Affairs and the UO Department of Anthropology are sponsoring the event. Golan is chair of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Kamal is director of gender planning and development for the Palestinian Authority. The lecture is the final event in a year-long series focusing on peace between Muslims and Jews and Palestinians and Israelis in the Middle East. Through seminars and classes on the role of cross-cultural communication in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and public lectures by other visiting scholars, the UO program has explored ways to support communication and peace-building efforts among Palestinians and Israelis. Kamal and Golan will meet with UO students, faculty and local community groups during their visit to the UO.
