EUGENE--The Oregon Humanities Center will host events featuring the composer and performer of music for the PBS documentary on Northwest explorers Lewis and Clark, as well as two award-winning Oregon writers during the first Campus Arts Faire on Saturday, May 23. Gary Stroutsos, a Seattle scholar and artist of the many traditions of the North American Native flute, will give a free lecture and demonstration at 2 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. Stroutsos composed and played the music featured in the recent Public Broadcasting Service documentary, "Lewis and Clark," by filmmaker Ken Burns. President Clinton invited the Seattle musician to play at the White House in November 1997. Stroutsos' latest release, "Native Heart," on Makoche Records will be among his CDs available for sale at the May 23 event. At 4:30 p.m. in the Gerlinger Alumni Lounge, poet John R. Campbell of Eugene and fiction writer Lidia Yuknavitch of Portland--UO alumni and winners of Poets and Writers' Magazine's 1997 Writers' Exchange awards--will present a free literary reading. Their May 23 reading, given in New York City last October, is the first reading of these award-winning works in Oregon. A free public reception with Stroutsos, Campbell and Yuknavitch will follow at 6 p.m., also in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall. For more information about the center's May 23 events, visit the Oregon Humanities Center's website at <http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~humanctr/> or call (541) 346-3934.
