EUGENE--A mixture of musical genres and styles, from contemporary tunes to chamber music for vocal and instrumental ensembles, will be featured in the five concerts this week that wrap up the spring-term concert season at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Friday, May 29--Green Garter Band

The Green Garter Band, one of the music school's most popular student ensembles, will give its spring concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Green Garter Band, best known to the community for its performances at many UO basketball games, is one of the music school's elite performing groups, serving as one of the public relations arms of the UO band program. The 13-piece ensemble, under the direction of John MacDonald, plays for conventions, civic clubs, alumni functions, booster organizations and special campus events.

The concert contains a wide range of musical styles, from rhythm and blues to jazz to the best of classic and current rock 'n' roll. Typical programs feature tunes by Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, Paul Simon, Manhattan Transfer and others.

Sunday, May 31--Chamber Musicale

Student musicians will perform 19th-century chamber music in a "Chamber Musicale" at 3 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The program contains four trios, including a piano-violin-horn trio by Brahms, a clarinet-cello-piano trio by Vincent D'Indy, and piano-string trios by Beethoven and Mendelssohn. The performers are graduate and undergraduate musicians under the guidance of Gregory Mason, director of accompaniment and chamber music studies at the School of Music.

Tuesday, June 2--University Singers and UO Chamber Choir

The University Singers and UO Chamber Choir will give a joint concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Chamber Choir, directed by Associate Professor Mark Beudert, will perform Italian chamber music, including "Ave Maria" and "Pater Noster" by Verdi, "Il Carnivale di Venezia" and "I Gondolieri" by Rossini, and six madrigals by Lauridsen.

The University Singers, directed by Associate Professor Richard Clark, will perform two choral works by Brahms, two selections by Hindemith based on texts by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Lay a Garland" by Robert Pearsall and three motets using poems by Hildegard von Bingen. They also will perform three South American selections, including a folk song set in the style of a Baroque fugue, an Afro-Brazilian song by Villa-Lobos and a tango-like song by Argentinian composer Oscar Escalda.

Wednesday, June 3--Contemporary Music Ensemble

The UO Contemporary Music Ensemble, specializing in 20th-century chamber music, will give a concert at 8 p.m. in Room 186 of the Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission is free.

Among the featured works is a solo piano piece by John Cage and a saxophone sonata by Paul Creston arranged for solo sax and the ensemble. Also on the program are original works by graduate composers David Ozab (bass, percussion and electronics), Bill Campbell (solo viola and ensemble) and Brian Coughlin (chamber opera).

The instrumentation for the Contemporary Music Ensemble includes saxophone, electric guitar, cello, bass, percussion and piano, as well as several guest vocalists.

Thursday, June 4--UO Women's Chorus and Men's Chorus

The UO Women's Chorus and UO Men's Chorus will give their spring concerts at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

The Women's Chorus, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Jeanie Neven, will sing "The Willow Song" by Alfred Reed, several folk song adaptations by Aaron Copland, "Laudate Dominum" by Mozart, madrigals by Roger Bourland and "A Passing Glimpse" by UO graduate composer Lily Barmor.

The Men's Chorus, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Angelo Dias, will perform several arrangements for male chorus by Dias, including songs by Jacoppo Peri, Thomas Morley and Givlio Caccini, and "Moon River" by Henry Mancini. Also on their program is "The Hunter's Song" by UO graduate composer Brian McCarren.
