WHAT University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer will lead a "tour de fitness," a mile-long hike around campus to celebrate National Fitness Month and Oregon Fitness Day. Hikers will include UO key administrators, Athletic Director Bill Moos, football coach Mike Bellotti, women’s basketball coach Jody Runge, and members of the faculty and staff.

WHEN Noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 19

WHERE The fitness hike begins with an opening ceremony at the Amphitheater, Erb Memorial Union (EMU), 1222 E. 13th Ave., proceeds east along 13th Avenue to Agate Street, south to 15th Avenue, west through campus to the Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane, and concludes back at the EMU Amphitheater.

BACKGROUND

The UO fitness walk is designed to give members of the campus community the opportunity to spend time with their colleagues, enjoy the beauty of the campus environment and celebrate fitness. Participating UO departments and programs will have tables and stations along the route containing wellness and fitness information, and raffle tickets for walkers. At the conclusion of the walk, raffle tickets will be collected and the winner will receive a free yearlong membership to the new Recreation and Fitness Center, scheduled to open in fall 1999. Located at 15th Avenue and University Street, the new center will combine renovated existing space in historic Esslinger Hall with new additions to create a multi-level facility that will increase indoor activity area by more than 50 percent.

"Many people who work on campus skip lunch or eat at their desks," says Karen Logvin, UO work and family services administrator. "We felt this was a good opportunity to get outside and celebrate spring and healthful living, and walk a mile with our colleagues."

The fitness walk is sponsored by the university’s new wellness consortium, which is comprised of departments and programs on campus that are involved in fitness or wellness activities.
