EUGENE–Paul Brainerd ’70, a Seattle philanthropist and founder of PageMaker software, and Bruce Carey, ’84, M.S. ’87, co-owner of the Zefiro and Saucebox restaurants in Portland, will receive the University of Oregon Alumni Association’s highest awards in 1999.

Brainerd will receive the 1999 Distinguished Alumnus Award at a May 18 ceremony at the Columbia Tower Club in Seattle. Carey will receive the 1999 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award during UO spring commencement exercises on June 12 in Eugene.

The awards recognize "outstanding individuals who have attained extraordinary distinction in their chosen professional fields or by personal endeavors."

"We’re proud to honor Paul and Bruce," says Dan Rodriguez, executive director of the Alumni Association. "Both men have achieved tremendous success in their fields and continue to make the university proud through their involvement in their communities."

Brainerd, a Medford native, majored in management and minored in journalism at the UO, serving as editor of the Oregon Daily Emerald his senior year. He later earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. Brainerd helped plan and implement newspaper prepress computer systems for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune Co., and served as vice president of customer service and product management for Atex, Inc., which manufactures dedicated publishing systems for newspapers and magazines.

Brainerd’s early career experience gave him an idea that would change the way the world thought about publishing. In 1984 Brainerd founded the Aldus Corp. to develop new software that would allow business and creative professionals to perform page layout and design on microcomputers. He coined the term "desktop publishing" to describe his approach and called his lead product PageMaker.

Over the next 10 years, PageMaker helped make Aldus one of the top 10 software companies in the world, with annual revenues exceeding $200 million. Brainerd served as president until 1994 when the company merged with Adobe Systems, Inc. He took his share of the proceeds–about $120 million–and endowed the Brainerd Foundation, a funding agency that promotes grassroots involvement in environmental protection. He is also a founding member of Social Venture Partners, a Seattle-based group that encourages high-technology professionals to give back time, money and expertise to their communities.

The 1999 Outstanding Young Alumnus, Carey, was born in La Grande and raised in Salem. He studied political science at the UO and was involved in a litany of extracurricular activities, including student government, debate and the University Choir. While a student, he supplemented his income by working at Eugene’s Excelsior Cafe. After a year in Washington, D.C., as an intern for U.S. Sen. Mark Hatfield, Carey returned to Eugene to earn an interdisciplinary master’s degree in public planning and the arts.

He moved to San Francisco after graduating and, after spurning a career in the arts, returned to the industry that supported him through school: restaurants. He worked at the Zuni Cafe and Fog City Diner in San Francisco, quickly moving from waiter to management. In 1989 he teamed with Chris Israel, a chef he met at the Zuni Cafe, and moved to Portland. The pair opened Zefiro in September 1990. The restaurant, an instant hit, has since been featured in The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Bon Appetit and Gourmet. It was named the Oregonian newspaper’s Restaurant of the Year in 1995. Carey and Israel’s second restaurant, Saucebox, is enjoying rave reviews, and was 1998’s Oregonian Restaurant of the Year.

Besides managing both Zefiro and Saucebox, Carey serves on many Portland-area boards, including the executive advisory board of the Cascade AIDS Project and the board of trustees of the Oregon Ballet Theater.

This is the 30th year the UO Alumni Association will recognize outstanding alumni.
